Description
Commenced Brewing 2004 at Mimram Rd, Hertford as Red Squirrel Brewery. Moved in 2011 to Berkampstead Rd, Potton End after merging with a local Wine Producer. Rebranded to Mad Squirrel in February/March 2017 with some core range beers being renamed and others simply changing name from Red to Mad.
A Forward thinking, contemporary brewery based just outside of London, at the foot of the Chiltern Hills. We have continually grown and evolved, often in unexpected ways. Always with a boundless enthusiasm for quality, an inquisitive approach to flavour and a restless desire to better ourselves.

Cask at the Barrel Vault, St Pancras on 7th February 2026. Slightly hazy amber with shallow whitish foam and scant lacing. Hoppy and mildly pungent aroma. Zesty peel and nutty malts in-mouth, and a finish of both. Light bodied with a velvet smooth texture.

440ml can at home on 5th February 2026. Clean brown body, off white crust. Not as nutty as the name suggests, some earthy chocolate notes and aromas but hazelnuts in my can. Decent enough Stout but lacked the main ingredient to me.

20/1/2026. Draft at Crosse Keys, London. Just had a generous taster. Lots of lime cordial. Not at all tart. Lightly herbal. Quite liked it. But not enough to have a pint.

440ml can from the brewery online store. Poured almost black in colour with a short-lived, frothy tan head. The aroma is roasty , light dark chocolate. The flavour is moderate liquorice bitter, with a smooth, somewhat light, roasty, dark chocolate, spicy, warm boozy alcohol bitter palate and some alcohol burn. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. No hint of any sweetness if Iām honest and nothing like the cake it was supposed to mirror. Disappointing.

Mahogany brown topped with a lasting beige head.
Nose is biscuit, chocolate, nutty, dried fruit rinds.

Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying close.
Passable stout ... a little thin on flavour for my liking.
