Description
The Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery leads the Craft Beer Revolution in Ontario. Brewing radical Beers and creative Ales right on the waterfront in downtown Barrie since 2004, the Flying Monkeys was the first Ontario Craft Brewery to truly recognize the need to overthrow the conservative regime of macro-brews and timid small batch taste-a-likes and create a new Culture of Craft Brewing in our province.

Casting off the comfortable and respectable cloak of the Robert Simpson Brewing Company, and revealing our true selves as the Flying Monkeys late in 2008, we gave rise to the the collective creativity of our Brewery and committed our Brewhouse to the adventurous longings of the growing culture of Craft Beer Lovers in Ontario.

A little too heavy on booze here. Pours black without any head or lacing. Aroma of sugarcane and sweet lollipop. Way too much booze and sweetness here. Only a little roast considering it’s all day. Finishes sweet with some bitterness. Tap at bar hop.

(Draught at Bryden’s, Toronto, Mar 8 2013) Pours a very hazy deep orange with a finger of thick white head, lots of lace. Aroma of tropical fruit, citrus, malts, a bit of wood and conifer. Palate initially very grapefruit-heavy, maybe the cedar is augmenting this but it’s not obvious at first. Malt backbone fills in with caramel, some sweetness. Cedar lends some astringency, peppery, woody, very light resin, citrus. Finish is fairly bitter, neither very sweet nor dry, boozy heat. Full-bodied, a little sticky but not too cloying. Carb fairly high, big alcohol component. Tasty, drinkable, heavy-hitting. Seems to be a polarizing beer but I quite like it.

Pours a very light hazy, golden-amber colour with a big frothy off-white head that stays long and gives out stringy lace. Beautiful mild hop aromas (seems like Cascade) covering the wheat and light citrus. Light wheat taste with a little bite from the hop and the cereal coming back to linger. Refreshing, easy-going, light tasting wheat brew with a nice nose. Probably quite nice for summer.

355mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks Mike), pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a small tan / light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts and citrus hops upfront - pretty standard for a black IPA. Flavour is also fairly typical, but well-executed, for a black IPA, with roasted malt upfront, followed by dry hoppy bittering which lingers on the finish. Nothing special about this, but it does what it does very competently. Solid stuff.

Awesome beer. Probably best of the day. Strong aroma of cedar here. Couple that with citrus, booze and a little malt. Cloudy orange pour with respectable head and lacing. Bitter finish with a little tang. Average carbonation, consistency. Tap at Rhino Winterfest.

Bouteille 750ml.
