Description
The Spoetzl Brewery - named after its original brewmaster Kosmos Spoetzl, was founded in Shiner, Texas in 1909; hence their brand name for their beers - Shiner. Spoetzl is the oldest independent brewery in the State of Texas that began its storied history by brewing beer with old-world traditions and recipes for the many German and Czech settlers in the state. Since then, the brewery has grown to be one of the leading independent brewers in the country. The brewery is 100% family-owned and is a certified craft brewery by the Brewer’s Association. Every drop of Shiner is proudly brewed in Shiner.

By far the best Shiner product I’ve tried to date. Pours a nice light and dusty gold with a massive foamy head (that disipates rather quickly.) Aroma is weak... of sweet malt, maybe some grassy scents, with minimal lemon. Lemon comes through stronger in taste (although is never too pronounced). Other flavors that intermingle include sweet malt and hay. The sweet flavors compliment the understated lemon rather well, making this one a rather fine (cheap) refreshing summer brew.

Pour is a cloudy yellow with a big white head. Aroma is wheat with a touch of lemon. Flavor is decent. Lots of yeast and lemon zestyness to make this a good rep of the style. The best brew from this brewer by far!

Not very good. I was expecting something very bock-ish, only to be disappointed with a rather watery imposter. It isn’t disgusting or anything, but it doesn’t go anywhere either. Aroma and appearance are definitely this one’s strong points.

Bottle Pours a very light slightly hazy golden color with a dense thick white head. Aroma is definatelty a wheat beer but has a distinctive German/Belgian yeasty note. Flavor is light and a bit swet. Very mild grain flavors and pleasant but not much of a backbone. Very littel bittering hops and a soft carbonation. Slight bready aftertaste. Simple and fairly tasty.

Bottle. Upon the first few sips of this, it seems to be quite good, with honey, wheat, a touch of sourness and light citrus all coming together to be quite refreshing. However, the refreshment wears off, and the beer warms considerably. Now, it seems to be an overly sweet, extract-tasting mess of wheat, sharp/soured notes and a strange, lightly stale finish. Fairly watery consistency, moderate carbonation. Aroma is not much to speak of, just light lemon, honey and perhaps some hops.

Not a whole lot to describe. Looks very thin out of the bottle, extremely pale and transparent. Nice carbonation builds into a white head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is weak... Taste is more like you would expect from a mass produced macrobrew like Bud or Miller. Directionless and rather weak. Fortunately it was on sale for a mere $5.00 which might still be a little high. Could be worse.

Bottle Pours a clear dark brown with a good sized off white head. Fairly sweet, woody malts are the main players in the aroma. Flavor is a simple slightly bitter, woody flavor. Slightly metallic even. Thin watery feel and a carbonated bite that is a bit much. Aftertaste doesn’t leave you with much but a slightly bitter trailer.

Es ist etwas wässrig, dennoch bei weitem nicht so wässrig wie man es von amerikanischen Lagern gewohnt ist, außerdem ist es relativ süffig. Ich würde es als gutes Durchschnittsbier bezeichnen. Test vom 19.10.2004, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 8,8,9,7,11,9 - 8,55

On draught at Pappadeaux in the Houston airport. Glad to finally find this classic Texan beer. Copper-colored with a thin off-white head. Toasted grain and malt in the nose. Medium-bodied with a flavor somewhere between a Bock and an Adjunct Lager. Malt, stale hops and caramel are what the beer offers. The finish is smooth and does not contain much flavor other than some sweet malt. I can’t really call this beer a disappointment because it met my expectations. It does not do the Bock style justice though.

Pours is a very clear yellow with a fizzy head. No real aroma and the flavor is dull and flat. You get some hops and malts in there but again very dull and flat. Not great but better than bud and cheaper too.
