Description
Flying Dog Brewery is a craft brewery located in Frederick, Maryland. It was founded in 1990 as a brewpub in Aspen, Colarado by George Stranahan and Richard McIntyre. Demand for Flying Dog beers quickly grew beyond the brewpub's capacity. In 1994, the company opened a 30-barrel brewery (Broadway Brewing Company) in Denver. Looking to expand again in 2006, Flying Dog purchased Frederick Brewing Company in Frederick, Maryland and began producing beer in both Maryland and Colorado. In December 2007, Flying Dog announced that it was closing the Denver brewery and would solely produce beer in its Frederick facility.

Bottle. For a start, it pours way to clear for a hefe. Looks like it’s been filtered or pasteurized. White head that disappears right away, gold body. Smells like a banana mashed into a prescription piull bottle. Well, it does taste like a hefe or two I’ve had before, usually the bottled ones that’ve been on the shelf too long. Something in it just seems artificial. Like only a little less orange flavoring than the Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat. I just wouldn’t give this to anyone who’s not had a craft beer before. (It was in a "Midwestern sampler pack" with other midwest brands like Anchor and North Coast. Hmmm)

Nice clear copper color with thin off white head. Seems to be a considerable hoppy (grapefruit) nose for the style. Tastes like a hybrid Oktoberfest/IPA with solid grapefruit hop bitterness to go along with a slight sweet maltiness. Not really a complex flavor but a tasty brew none the less.

Bottle. Sour malt aroma - very lager-like. Clear orange-yellow color with small head. Sour malt primarily with moderate hops and astringency. Like a mixture of a bad pale lager and a mediocre bock.

Rerate, 12 fl. oz. bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger, Norway. ABV here is 8.7%. Pitch black colour, large chocolate brown head. Interesting aroma with vinous notes, roasted malts, molasses and newmown hay, maybe some woodwork too. The flavour has a very powerful malty sweetness and an enormous richness, with notes of strong sweetened coffee, dark bitter chocolate and Danish pastry.
The bitterness is as high as 85 IBU, but it doesn’t taste that bitter, as the hops are balanced with the malty sweetness. Liquorice in the aftertaste. Definitely a "sipping beer". When you know what to expect, this is actually a great drinking experience! I’m upping it a few points. Original rating: Bottle, at Plain Kitchen, Göteborg. Black colour, moderate creamy tan head. Overwhelming malty sweet aroma, roastiness, molasses and bakery / Danish pastry. Flavour is VERY sweet (too sweet) - molasses, sweetened coffee, sweet pastry, chocolate. There’s just too much of the good stuff. Unbalanced.
