Description
Flying Dog Brewery is a craft brewery located in Frederick, Maryland. It was founded in 1990 as a brewpub in Aspen, Colarado by George Stranahan and Richard McIntyre. Demand for Flying Dog beers quickly grew beyond the brewpub's capacity. In 1994, the company opened a 30-barrel brewery (Broadway Brewing Company) in Denver. Looking to expand again in 2006, Flying Dog purchased Frederick Brewing Company in Frederick, Maryland and began producing beer in both Maryland and Colorado. In December 2007, Flying Dog announced that it was closing the Denver brewery and would solely produce beer in its Frederick facility.

First ratingSampled from 12 fl oz bottle courtesy of Marsiblursi. Red-brown color, tan head. Lots of alcohol in the scent. Malty and sweet, spicy. Taste is fresh spicy and a bit fruity, with "classic Barley Wine" taste as well. Big mouthfeel. Feeling of warming alcohol.8/3/7/4/14=3.6RerateBottle at the BW tasting, but not sure who brought the bottle?Sampled on February 26, 2011Cloudy brown color, yellow head. Acidic, grainy scent. Bottle (something big for 1300). Prune and banana aroma with moderate alcohol nose. Murky orangish brown color with minimal head. Slight sweet banana/orange peel flavor with moderate astringency and alcohol. Mild hops finish. Fairly light for the style. Good but Aventinus is a better buy.

Nice medium amber color with a small head. Aroma is a mild hops and malt scent. Taste is a blend of hops, citrus, pine, malts, and sweetness. A little more on the sweet side than the hoppy side. Nice brew overall.

Deep reddish-brown body, thick, puffy tan head. Banana and dark fruits in the nose, caramely sweet with a touch of strawberry. Sweet, cerealy body, not quite what I expect from a weizenbock, but there are still notes of banana. Strong sweetness, but not overpowering. Not much complexity or depth, but not a bad experience.

Lighter amber color with an ample tan head. Aroma is a bit light, but consisted of a nice sweet and hoppy scent. Taste is more malty with a light hops kick and hints of caramel. Tastes good, but lacked intensity.

Black with brown head. Sweet malt and burnt black patent make for a nice aroma. Taste is rich sweet malt that balances out the dry burnt malt of the black patent. Adds welcome complexity to the porter like malt flavor. Nice. I was expecting an over abundance of burnt black patent. This malt combo creates balance and added interest in the next sip. I also detect a bit of a port wine flavor and some wood. Very good beer.

Clear dark brown with a hint of a red hue. Weak off white head. Inviting aroma. I can smell the black patent roasted malts and some of the caramelized crystal malts. Nice smell. The Scottish ale flavor competes for dominance with the Porter ale flavor. I think the scales tip toward Porter. The sweet caramel flavor is eaten up by the burnt and dry tasting black patent. Makes for a nice tasting beer.

Pured gold color, crystal clear and tiny white head. Aroma of grainy wheat or pale like malts and a little skunky yeast. Nice Bock flavor. It goes from yeasty/tangy to yeasty/fruity-sweet to some hop bite then to smooth yet grainy malts. Not bad at all.

Clear light gold color with almost no head. I smell bread yeasty-ness, lightly roasted malts and a bit of skunkyness. The taste is mild lightly roasted malts to give it a biscuit and a bit of caramel flavor. The yeast shows up in bulk also. It yields a bread and slightly tangy/skunky flavor. The bitter hops seem to build near the end of the taste. OK beer. Not my bag.
