Description
Flying Dog Brewery is a craft brewery located in Frederick, Maryland. It was founded in 1990 as a brewpub in Aspen, Colarado by George Stranahan and Richard McIntyre. Demand for Flying Dog beers quickly grew beyond the brewpub's capacity. In 1994, the company opened a 30-barrel brewery (Broadway Brewing Company) in Denver. Looking to expand again in 2006, Flying Dog purchased Frederick Brewing Company in Frederick, Maryland and began producing beer in both Maryland and Colorado. In December 2007, Flying Dog announced that it was closing the Denver brewery and would solely produce beer in its Frederick facility.

2002 vintage bottle, tasted 11/16/03. Poured nice layer of pinprick bubbles, like a nitro pull, that dissolved into a thin layer of bubbles posing as a head. Dark reddish-brown body. Big smell of coffee malts, raisin and plum flavors, very chewy, with a subtle hop balance. Still, none of these makes for a great barleywine compared to the others, but then it's a style in which there's a lot of competition to go "bigger," innit?

Not a very pleasant aroma- creamed corn, some sourness. Garnet red-brown body with a thin ring of white carbonation clinging to the sides of the glass. Flavor is a mess too- chocolate notes overridden by a cloying syrupy tanginess. Again, some of that creamed corn flavor. Bitter finish. Rather thin-bodied. Strange and slightly disturbing.

Rating #100 for the beer:
Amber colour with a thin off-white head. Strong aroma of malt and hops, very nice! Medium-bodied; Velvety texture with a subtle malt character. Sweet caramely flavour with a tiny bit of hops. Aftertaste very mild only showing a subset of the full flavour. Overall, good beer, not great - I reccomend Anchor over this one. I had this pint on draught at MacGregor's in Rochester, New York.

Dark brown, brownish head. Nose is nutty (albeit very fresh), malty. Dark, sweet and roasted malts, dark bread, chocolate, but subdued, unsmoked tobacco. Pretty filling, soft-velvety palate. Nice roasted taste, but nothing overwhelming. (Sample was VERY young).

(draught) Hazy, very cloudy yellow; no head. Very subdued clove. Very little banana ester. Banana flavour extremely evident in the taste, to the extent of being exclusive. Underlying taste very neutral. Rather thinnish, but, once more, served 100x to bl... cold. Warming up it gets a bit better. Rather weak try for a wheat.

(draught) Clear dark amber. No head. Citrussy, lemonbalm-like hops aroma. Nutty and citrussy hoppy flavour - good American hops. But there's precious little malt to balance. Very little body. OK - but nothing more.

Nice dark brown colour, even a bit red when you hold it up to a light. Good slightly tan colour on the head with plenty of large bubbles. Smells of raisins, grapes and some roasted malt. Even the essence of metal comes from the smell a bit. The taste is pretty good and roasty. Some chocolate (very mild) and caramel flavours arise, but they aren't very noticable. The beer is definately watery and lacks the complexity in the finish that would make it a higher ranked beer. More heavily weighted to the malt side of things definately, but some hops are still evident even a few minutes after taking a sip. Not a horrible beer, but not one that I would buy again. I bought this 12 ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York.
