Description
The brewery was founded in 2005 by four home brewers who wanted to make high quality beers. In 2016 two of the original founders retired, and the brewery is today owned by a constellation of the two remaining founders, some employees at the brewery and three other Norwegian craft breweries.

Haandbryggeriet currently has 10 employees all participating in developing new ground breaking beers and recipes.

The brewery has a wide selection ranging from classic and traditional beers to new and innovative brews and hybrid beer styles. Sometimes brewed with local and Nordic ingredients such as cherries, sea buckthorn, raspberries, and lingonberries. Haandbryggeriet has since 2005 also made high quality sours and barrel aged beers such as porters and Christmas beers.

50 cL bottle. Pours slight hazy orange with a quick disappearing head. Sweet to slight apple nose, minor spice note. Spiced flavour, slight sweet and with decent bitterness. Seems slight perfumed in the flavour, I assume that is the spices.

Rerate: Bottled, Norse Porter. Nice dark color, medium brown head. Lovely aroma of coffee and roasted malt, hint of chocolat. Rich taste, quite bitter. Great stuff. I cant believe the porter I drank in 2007 and this beer are the same? Original: Opaque color, short brown head. Aroma of coffe, roasted malt, quite spicy of clove and nutmeg, licorice. Bitter taste, coffee, dry, spicy, sour of licorice. Very dry porter. 737314

Opaque pour, with a well-retained, frothy tan head - the aroma is immediately interesting - the wheat malt is very apparent, imparting an earthy, grainy, almost musty quality to the aroma - the expected chocolate and coffee smells are there, but the wheat mixes things up, almost giving the beer a weizenbock character - the flavor is very weizenbock - caramel and toffee and that wheat earthy tartness are quite strong - espresso bitterness, bakers chocolate and a flaked oat slickness let you know this is a stout, though - very creamy and flavorful, and the wheat works quite well (I expected otherwise).

Hazy amber pour, with a gigantic off-white head - wonderfully woody and smokey aroma, much like schlenkerla, with juniper very subdued, some biscuity malt, earthy, leathery notes - soft mouthfeel - quite dry, with mineral/chalk notes - the smoke is not as prominent as the aroma suggests, nor is the juniper - smoke and wood combine with the dry, earthy qualities to give the beer a charcoal-like character that is not entirely pleasant - an interesting mix of spices near the end, plus something else, lurking far in the background.......WORMWOOD! - good lord, why? - sure, there’s only a little bit, but even that is too much - the beer was doing so well, but this wormwood taste lingering on my tongue is starting to kill the experience.

Three 200ml tasters (bottle). Very dark coloured body with a rusty tint. Nice brown-yellow foam. A rather discreet aroma has got a vinously touch with notes of liquorice. The taste starts with a wheaty touch and develops into a climax of dark berries and rounded chocolatly maltiness. Lingering aftertaste with a alcohol finish. Robust, strong and full bodied brew, perhaps with a bit too dominant yeasty touch in the ending (Tromsø Ølfestival, 15.08 and 16.08.2007).

200ml taster from bottle. Pours a russet body colour under a thin tan cap. Firm lacing on the glass. Woody and earthy smell with notes of moderate smokiness. Flavour got a brush of juniper berry and a blend of spicy malts followed by dark fruits. Slightly yeasty bitterness towards the end (Tromsø Ølfestival, 15.08.2007).

200ml taster from a bottle at Tromsø Ølfestival. Moderate chocolate aroma joined by a touch of anise. Low-level foam over a dark-brown body. Roasted malts in a taste that is supported by coffee beans. Salty and a bit smoky. The brew gives an overall impression of being rather sheltered in flavour. (15.08.2007).

Bottle at GBBF 2007. Hazy copper, lasting beige head. Interesting hop aroma, strong but really grapefruity. Very piney, redcurrant bush leafiness. Different, characterful. Some berries. It is rather interesting.
