Description
We find that the best moments in life — the most memorable — are when we spend time in the company of those who are most important to us. Our beer and spirits are made for these moments.

It all started for us in 1997 when Brett VanderKamp believed that his hometown and the brewing industry were due for a shakeup. And so, New Holland Brewing Company was born in Holland, Michigan near the shores of Lake Michigan.

Today, New Holland is recognized as one of the leading innovators in the revolution of craft brewing and distilling. With nearly 500 team members, New Holland’s craft beer and spirits are sold across the country, and around the globe. Our retail presence continues to grow with two full-service restaurants, a spirits tasting room, two brick-and-mortar stores and an online store.

We look forward to finding moments to connect and enhancing the lives of people around the world.

Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Jul 9th, 2004: Pours a rich yellow color with a thin and dense white head that did not last long. Minimal lacing. The aroma consists of tropical fruit and yeast. Light-bodied and on the carbonated side, with a spicy character and flavors of molasses, malt and citrus. The finish is semi-sweet spices with a touch of hops. On the shallow end of the Belgian pool but a decent beer regardless.

Pours a lightly hazy golden orange color with a medium thin white head. Thin lacing. The aroma is floral hops and citrus. Medium body with a nicely bitter character throughout. Hops, citrus and pine are all evident. It contains just a touch of sourness toward the end but nothing too bad. The finish is nicely hopped with a pinch of malt. Overall this is a solid APA.

2004 bottle. Pours a deep, thick, juicy yellow with a good creamy white head. Sediment at the bottom. Good complex aroma of lemon puff cookies, light belgian yeast, angel food cake, hints of lemon and cream. Flavor is similar to an Abbey Trippel with its lighter mouthfeel, sweet, yeasty flavors and hints of lemon, but there is a stronger sweet malt here, and the mouthfeel gets a bit too creamy and sweet. Light yellow fruit esters, good medium to medium full body. Even hints of goldings hops (or something similar) on the finish. Smooth and tastey, though a bit too much on the malting, IMHO.

2004 bottle. At first sniff I thought, cardboard soaked in wort. Hoped it wasnt another case of tasteless New Holland brew, a la Dragon’s Milk. Flavor provided somewhat of a relief. There is some balance here, very dry, rooty plant tasting hops and some lightly peppery ones as well, but very subtle. The malt is very dry and grainy. Lots of water. Oh ya, it also smelled like mineral water, and has a mineralesque water flavor to it as well. A hint of some fruit on the finish, too faint to really determine what. Maybe raspberry. Slight overcarbonation gives it a soda water feel. Strange buttery flat aftertaste. Hopefully black tulip is better. Looks a nice strawberry red, small fizzy head. Very filtered.

Bah, let it warm to 45 my ass. Let it warm to about 55. Nice milk chocolate color, good light tan large head. Mostly clear. Some milk chocolate aroma, light roast and a touch of caramel or brown sugar in the aroma. Begins with some standard roast flavor. Hints of sweet malt and light hops creep in. True to description, it has a good creamy palate, if not a bit thin perhaps. Not a very big sweet stout though. More of a mild regular roast stout. Medium-light body, good flavor, nice lighter example.

2003 bottle. Wow, what a let down. Cool name, good brewery. Bottle conditioned at least, hazy almost green tinged color, bubbly. Small white head. What the hell is this flavor???? It's like light pear meets green apples gone bad. Sour, slightly acetic, bad. Stale with no malting perceptible. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but anyways, I didnt finish it and certainly didnt like it. Tasted like Miller Lite gets a make-over.

2003 bottle. Well at least TAR and Psychprof tasted artificial sweetener. That’s one more thing than I tasted. PS. Drainpour. 6/3/3/2/8

This was under 6 months old. Better than the last time I had it, but severely underwhelming, with no malt complexity. On the plus side, it wasnt over-the-top or alcoholic. Nothing worth drinking again, IMHO. Still somewhat of a thin texture, rather washed out and loose/watery.

Pours clear copper, moderate lacing - strong hop aroma, with citrus and apricot - medium malt backbone grounds the hop character - flavors of pine, apricots, a touch of cotton candy - juicy hop flavor - long finish - a tasty IPA.

Perhaps Sir William condoned rations, but the Dutch of Holland sure wouldn't be caught handing out "doles." This beer poured a fiery copper red-orange, with a thin off-white ring of carbonation hugging the glass. Spicy wheat aroma with a touch of moldy hay. Flavor dominated by wheat tang, with touches of fruit and wet hay. Alcohol is evident. Would be interesting to age. Still, the "wheat wine" style is limited by the predictable nature of its signature grain. I accept my dole, although this pilgrim, if he may suggest, prefers more interesting handouts.

This rather lonely bottle must have hit the cooler shelf for Y2K4. Even though it's a barleywine, Y2K seems to have jumped the shark. Poured dark caramel-brown, loaded with yeast sediment. Aroma was very much like the 2000 Celebration Ale I recently tried. Strong caramel and yeast notes mingled with hints of raisin. Flavor was sharp caramel/raisin, definite alcohol, and a few sulfuric notes. Finished spicy, almost like the Ichabod, and bitterness. Old beer mouthfeel. Well past its prime, but an interesting find in GR.
