Undefined 'dark beer' spiced with nutmeg, one of Beerstorming's countless experiments deliberately trying to 'rethink' our concept of beer in general. Thick and frothy, papery lacing, pale yellowish beige, large-bubbled head on a dark chestnut brown beer with hazy, ruddy-mahogany hue. Aroma of (wet) nutmeg to the extreme, 'speculoos' and gingerbread, ginger cookies, grapefruit peel, crushed black peppercorns, burnt toast, caramelized succory, dried thyme, soap, chestnut. Cleanly fruity onset, hinting at pear, ripe sweet blackberry and medlar but all very abstractly so, spritzy carbonation though nowhere overly sharp; chestnutty, hard-caramelly and biscuity maltiness, sweetish and cookie-like with a mild soapiness to it and a light toasty-bitterish edge, enhanced by very outspoken nutmeg flavouring, very spicy and somewhat astringent, but not too much so, filling the nose cavity with soaking wet nutmeg colours retronasally. Spicy, drying hop bitterness supports this heavy nutmeg activity, and so does the toasty aspect of the malts, with all these elements remarkably blending well into one whole. Perhaps some time in the bottle did this weird nutmeg beer some good, considering the comments below, but I liked this one, contrary to my expectations; it was a spicy, tangy but also juicy and distinct beer that makes better use of the added nutmeg than many winter ales (that sometimes also use it) traditionally do. If ever there has to be a decent 'nutmeg beer' (which in itself is of course completely unnecessary), it has to be this one. Not sure why it is categorized as a 'stout' here, though, I think 'nutmeg-flavoured brown ale' would be more accurate, if anything... Anyway, regardless of style: one of the better Beerstorming brews for me, but I haven't been able to follow this unusual brewery's immense output, so who am I to know - ask 77ships, I'd say.
