Description
Way back in 2004 we chose to move our young family across the world from southern French vineyards to a 580 ha farm in the Derwent Valley in southern Tasmania with a dream of growing vines and making wine. Instead we discovered a rich hop growing history and embarked on a project of ale instead, using ingredients from our farm, this valley and from across Tasmania.
Our farm is integral to our business. The ales and cider we brew and ferment in the converted shearing shed would be a different beast should we have chosen instead an inner city warehouse. The farm gives us a sense of place, connected to land and to ingredients we grow ourselves and source from other Tasmanian farmers too.
The old shearing shed was converted to house our brewery in 2008. The brewhouse itself was originally the St. Ives brewery in Battery Point, Hobart, installed back in the late 1980s. Rehoused on our farm, the old kettle & tanks are lovingly nurtured to life to help us on our journey to find a unique estate brewed beer.

Cloudy, tart and dry, with light apple character. Made for cheddar I would say.

Cask at the brewery. Dark toffee, lots of apple, fresh acidity, good balance between acidity and the dark sugars.

Cask at the brewery. Muddy, light brown. Powdery hop, tart, maybe more than I’d like. Nice hop charcter but fruity tart Probably my least favourite one.

Cask at the brewery. Tart, grainy, floral, fruity hops, soft acidity. Hops are assertive, intense bitter finish. Very refreshing.

Bottled 9/15. 12C. Clear deep red with a just pink head that’s soon at the rim. Aroma is nicely integrated - can’t really tell where the cherries slip from sweet to tart to what’s not cherry at all. Untamed but mellow, has a funky woody character recognisable from the first time I tried the apple porter. Medium bodied, slightly slippery, low carbonation. I would have liked a few more bubbles. Taste: the richness of the cherries is brought out by quite sour beer underneath, which also has some apricot stones and/or almonds, stems. Sour but not quite dry, no bitterness. Nice but not spectacular fruit. Good balance but there’s not a lot of depth. A second glass is softer - maybe an indication that waiting a while would have been a good idea. This is very good. No bonus points for woad-daubed artisanship or ’no-one believed’.
