Hogback Mountain Brewery was founded in 2015 by Kevin Hanson with his love of brewing.

In 2018 Jamie and Sam Sawyer were looking for a new adventure in the Vermont craft beer scene and Kevin was looking to have more time to mow his lawn. Everything made perfect sense and in 2019 Hogback Mountain Brewery will move from Kevin’s carriage barn to its new location on Rocky Dale Road in Bristol, Vermont. Though Jamie and Sam are changing locations and will branch out with a taproom this spring, the mission of "local supporting local" has never changed.

Sam is 2017 graduate of the American Brewer's Guild and is the creative force behind many of our brews.

TAPROOM is open!! Stop in to experience some true VERMONT beers crafted with Vermont-grown ingredients.

This was poured into a pokal.
The appearance was a glossy burnt orange almost brown color with a quickly dissipating slim finger’s worth of little white head. No lacing.
The smell took in the sour to sweet to tart lemon rind bitterness. Delicate sweetness comes in-almost bubblegum-like. Wheat portion doesn’t seem as sour-ed as some goses I’ve had before. Still there, slightly.
The taste had a good combined effort between the sour to tart lemon rind and pulp. Light sweet bubblegum to sour aftertaste treats the finish as well.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a bit of a tad heavier sort of feel to it than some other goses I’ve had. Saltiness lines my tongue nicely, not as puckering, but still a decent level all around.
Overall, its a pretty good gose for the most part, I could see myself having again on warmer days.

This was poured into a becher pint glass.
The appearance was a fairly dark in its complexion leaning to the burnt amber/red almost brown side. A thin rim of a white foamy head started and dissipated at a nice pace. Light lacing slides around the glass nicely.
The smell starts off with sweet green/tobacco leafy crisp dryness. Light toffee sweetness, some caramel malt. Light tropical fruits do end up coming out just a bit as it warms.
The taste was moderately sweet with a touch of the toffee/caramel malt bouncing into the dry tobacco \"greeny/fresh\" feel surrounding it. Tobacco - sem-wet in the aftertaste and leading into the (slightly spicy) finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body. Decent sessionability about it. Carbonation rides nice and even.
Overall, interesting IPA, might lean towards the English side for the style without any \"soapiness.\" Do-able for me, but nothing over the top.

This was poured into a pokal.
The appearance was a modest transparent to semi-cloudy yellow color with a self-paced carbonation rising nicely. Head quickly dissipates. Lacing slides quickly into the beer.
The smell starts off with a sour/bitter blood orange rind. Sour mashed wheat is there underneath riding in for the balance. Slight salt ever so subtle. Lemon slides in as it warms.
The taste was there. Starts sour like a gose should in the flavor, takes in the blood orange bitterness, subtle sweet pulp - somewhat there. Salty to sour finish. No aftertaste.
On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a nice crisp sweet to sour sessionable feel, definitely crushable!
Overall, damn nice gose, this company does the lower ABV-ed beers really well!

This was poured into a weizen glass, (only proper/correct/traditional glassware for any weizen styled beer).
The appearance had the normal hazy to burnt/cloudy bronzed orange to brown color. Lasting one finger white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace.
The smell started off with the normal qualities of a hefeweizen - bready/German yeastiness up front, and then the banana esters and then the clove. Light bubblegum as it warms.
The taste follows the smell pretty much the same. Sticky sweet breadiness. Aftertaste seems a bit weaker than some other true hefeweizens I’ve had by other brewers. Wet yeasty finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium in body. Nice crisp sweet sessionability about it. Low carbonation.
Overall, for the style, its not bad, more yeastiness than expected, not as balanced as some other ones. I could see myself coming back to it, but perhaps not a go-to

This was poured into a mug.
The appearance was semi-dark burnt brown color with a slim finger’s worth of white to off white head that dissipated at a nice pace. Filmy to foamy off white lace almost covers the sides in rings.
The smell starts off with some sweet nutty/toffee/caramel malt up front and then some earthy and piney hop bitterness.
The taste was basically the same with a clean sweet sliding aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. Carbonation rides fairly light. Piney bitterness comes back to adequately make a decent effort for some harshness on my tongue.
Overall, hard to tell if its an English or an American brown ale, I’d say mostly a balance between the two as the aroma leans more American, but the flavor leans more English, hmmm...good stuff, I’d have again.

This was poured into a becher pint glass.
The appearance was a semi-dark burnt orange ranging close to brown color with a one finger white foamy head that formed rings of lace around the upper rim of the glass. A bit little darker than expected for an APA.
The smell starts off with an earthy tobacco sweetness allowing a nice dried pine backing up the aroma.
The taste was basically the same. Dried tobacco aftertaste leading into the same finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation feels good as an APA.
Overall, I dig it as an APA. But it definitely has a lot of earthy to tobacco aroma going on, reminds me of that 1890 IPA (by Freedom’s Edge [Wyoming brewery]) I had when I was out west. Good beer for the most part, can’t find fault.

This was poured into a stange.
The appearance was a semi-hazy / semi-burnt bronzed orange color with a slim white little head that dissipated at a nice pace. Carbonation could be seen rising at a nice pace. Semi-foamy bubbly lacing roamed around the glass.
The smell took on a dried sweet corn, light sweet lemon.
The taste was basically the same with the dry sweet corn aftertaste running into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a nice sessionable feel.
Overall, as a kolsch, this one works. Hogback did another fine job for this style!

This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a semi-hazy semi-burnt orange color with a fair transparency about it. Carbonation could be seen rising at a decent pace to fill a one finger white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Messy lacing.
The smell had an earthy zing popping over some bitter citrus hops. Some sweet grass lightens the load. Faded aroma.
The taste was mainly the same chipping at the palate to dry out and course a bitter earthy/semi-piney aftertaste leading into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a nice sessionability about it. Carbonation rides nice and low in this one.
Overall, its a decent session IPA, if one likes the earthier side of the flavor spectrum on their IPA’s. Me, I don’t mind it. I’d probably have again.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a slim finger’s worth of off white/creamy colored head. Light messy lacing glosses around the side of the glass.
The smell not only has the hazelnut, but some coffee, caramel and toffee rounding out the edges of it all. Subtle roast slides in to balance.
The taste was mainly sweet through the hazelnut, caramel and toffee. Coffee escapes more towards the background. There’s a light lingering sweet toffee and caramel in the aftertaste and that leads into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium in body with a pretty good sessionability about it. Carbonation runs really under in this one, so it gets extremely smooth and creamy with a slight stickiness all around.
Overall, hazelnut, well, its there, I didn’t mind it so much for me. Its good for the most part, it’s just got some other sweet aspects going on.

Call me a traditionalist but I poured this into a mug. Because I wanted to and you know, it smelled, tasted and felt really nice. Here’s the rest.
The appearance was a nice looking black color with a one finger white foamy head that quickly dissipated leaving a messy film of lacing sticking initially and then sliding into the beer.
The smell had a nice roasty cocoa bean sliding into subtle roasty coffee beans and quickly displacing the cocoa bean to allow some sweet vanilla to balance. Or at least that’s what I got, was that vanilla intentional? Hmmm...not sure.
The taste was moderately sweet with the roast to come back and balance nicely. Light bitterness slides in for a slight balance. Slight roasty cocoa aftertaste. Somewhat a wet sweet cocoa finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fine sessionability about it. Carbonation seems fairly under for the style, but still not too much of a hit as there’s a nice smooth to creamy sweet feel on my tongue.
Overall, American or English Porter, maybe closer to an English but still really nice no matter what styled Porter it is.
