Description
The Verbeeck-Back brewery has been around since the end of the 19th century, when it became one of the most beloved independent breweries in the northern region of Belgium. The brewery was, is and remains a family affair: no monks or big corporations in sight. The secrets of its successes were passed on from father to son until they became fathers themselves... and so on. However, the sons of the sixties-generation had other plans. In 1966, the brewery dozed off for a short nap.

In 2015, a new generation has risen and so has the brewery. The Verbeeck-Back family bloodline was reinforced by the De Cock family. Together, they have formed the formidable, reassuringly Belgian-sounding name Verbeeck – Back – De Cock. VBDCK. This new crop of VBDCK heirs to the family tradition of Belgian quality and craft has literally been digging up history by its roots. They are ripping through the nostalgic silence with KEREL, the beer that says it all, and the transformation of the original brewery and family residence into a new place to stay.

330ml bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck. Drunk at home while watching Zone Blanche. Pours deep amber, off-white topping. Not really the appearance I expected, not the nose which brings out some caramel malt notes. Double checked the beer and yes supposed to be a black IPA. Overall character seems to be an amber caramel-malt affair, soft marmalade, dried fruits, herbal swirls. A bit lacklustre in general, which is a shame as I quite liked the india stout I had from these.

3 February 2019. At Brugs Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke & Pieter! Hazy ochre with a lasting, thin, frothy, off-white head; little lacing. Intense aroma of orange peel, mango, canned peach, lime, lychee, green tea, sake, young cheese, spring onion. Taste is medium fruity sweet, lots of orange, peach, subtler notes of kiwi & lychee (as from a can), supported by a (white) bready malty base & early hint of alcohol; light to medium spicy bitter middle offers vague notes of grass & pepper, a bit herbal, rice-like perhaps. Slight sourish touch of lemon & lime before finishing dryish, floral hoppy, with vague spices, canned fruit & warming, but sharp gin-like alcohol. Medium body, slick/oily texture, soft carbonation. Interesting brew for sure, but needs a thicker palate for that amount of alcohol, and perhaps more depth in taste too.

0.33 l bottle from Angry Moose, Čakovec, Croatia. Shared with lovely Anja in Ljubljana. Dark amber on colour, small to a medium off-white head. Green apple, Acetaldehyde, some dark malts, not much hops here. Apple persistent in flavour, light dried fruits, some earthy hops, quite light. Light to a a moderate bitterness develops only in the light, moderately lasting finish. No freshness, no dark malt character, no real hop profile.

Bottle looks nice, interesting format. Beer in the glass zippy, small head. Mild malty aroma. Starts mild, malty, dry. Light salty touch. Finish still mild-malty, light wheaty-salty. Okay.

29/I/19 - 33cl bottle from a trade, shared with the misses @ home, BBE: 2019 - (2019-142) Thanks to Alengrin for the trade!
Pretty funny how this brewery, that's always making fun of tradition, old school beer styles, etc... is now themselves going back to their roots, and making a beer with a story based on it's past. :p Not sure if they got the irony of this concept themselves. :p
Clear dark orange to amber red beer, huge thick creamy off-white head, pretty stable, bit adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: malty start, bit fruity, yeast, banana, some marzipan, little spicy, caramel, bit oxidized maybe. MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: malty start, bit sweet, some caramel, banana, bitter, spicy, coriander notes. Aftertaste: bit spicy, some citrus, fruity, banana, nice bitterness, bit of an alcohol burn, actually this is pretty nice.
