Description
The Verbeeck-Back brewery has been around since the end of the 19th century, when it became one of the most beloved independent breweries in the northern region of Belgium. The brewery was, is and remains a family affair: no monks or big corporations in sight. The secrets of its successes were passed on from father to son until they became fathers themselves... and so on. However, the sons of the sixties-generation had other plans. In 1966, the brewery dozed off for a short nap.

In 2015, a new generation has risen and so has the brewery. The Verbeeck-Back family bloodline was reinforced by the De Cock family. Together, they have formed the formidable, reassuringly Belgian-sounding name Verbeeck – Back – De Cock. VBDCK. This new crop of VBDCK heirs to the family tradition of Belgian quality and craft has literally been digging up history by its roots. They are ripping through the nostalgic silence with KEREL, the beer that says it all, and the transformation of the original brewery and family residence into a new place to stay.

Bottiglia.

Bottle from Stanislaus Brewskovitch Craft Beer Store, Zwolle. Aroma is dark malt, caramel, soft old hops, notes of berries, some yeast, light candy, hint of diacetyl. Flavour is fairly sweet with a medium bitterness. Body is medium. Not a Black IPA, no roast or exotic fruits, it's more like a hoppy Belgian Brown Ale. Anyway, unremarkable but drinkable fare.

Bottle from Stanislaus Brewskovitch, Zwolle. Fruity and yeasty aroma with citrus, mildly peppery Saison yeast, floral notes, orange peel, grass, and grainy malt. Flavour is light sweet and bitter with a properly dry finish, which I definitely appreciate in my Saison. Body is medium. Enjoyable.

Bottle from Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Aroma is yeasty with alcohol, ripe fruits, orange, sugary notes, stone fruits, apricot, fruit marmalade. Sweet flavour with sugar and warming booze. Body is above medium. Crazy warming boozy 15% Belgian Strong Ale with sake yeast and it actually works. Lots of ripe sugary (stone) fruits.

Bottle from Lekkerbier, St. Nicolaasga. Aroma is modest fruity hop with grapefruit, malt, some caramel and pine. Flavour is light to moderate sweet with a fairly bitter finish. Body is medium. Lacks a distinct fruitiness, more like a malty APA. Decent.

Can from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours clear gold with a huge creamy white head that persisted. Aroma is strange but mostly citrus. Near med body. It's fruity but dry, even astringent in a slight way. I think the prickly pear is providing most of what seems to be bitterness. It is quite different. Drinks well.

Bottle from House of Trembling House, online. Light cloudy gold with small white head, nice retention. Simple but pleasant fruity aroma of yeast, citrus and grains. Taste is grainy, citrus, fruity, yeast, some banana.# Medium body and carbonation. Quite nice although doesn't stand out.
