bottle - A hard pour yielded a 2 finger, rapidly fading head on this clear yellow beer. It smells like mild malt and adjuncts. It tastes like sweet corn and other adjuncts. I’ve had worse and it’s not as watery as some. That’s as close to "good" as I can justifiably come with what’s apparently a favorite of many in Pittsburgh. It’s crap.

Malt aroma, a little sweet, some apple and butter notes.Golden color, almost no head. Grainy flavor with metal on the edges, rather bland. Tinny finish.

Very beefy aroma. Clear yellow color, no head. Virtually flavorless up front, but leaves barley and hops on the palate. I’ve had worse.

(**IMPORTANT NOTE: This rating is for "Olde Frothingslosh" and not Iron City, they are not the same brew tho this site considers them to be the same.**) Oh frothy sloshy, why am I the first to rate you? You have been around Pittsburgh for fifty years now. Only specially made in batches once in a while. I remember fondly those models on your cans, probably some of the more collectible in existence. This can is the 50th anniversary can, has a picture of Rege on it. Oh my garsh its frothingslarth, is proudly printed on the front. Pop the lid of this 12 oz can and you get a sour whiff of Pittsburgh style lager. The pour of this brew is ubiquitous pale yellow lager, like any typical american brew. The taste is near Iron City but more like Old German. You gotta love this stuff, cheap and fun. You know, KDKA was the first commercial radio station in the USA. Not quite as smooth as I would like but it is definitely OK with it’s gentleman like manners. No hops or malt detectable so it also lacks that bitterness inherent with such brews. Finish is well behaved and friendly, a good session brew. Try it, you may like it. Iron City lovers will accept this in stride.

Can, 355 ml, "gift" from Marc Gratton, “savoured” on April 27 2007; eye: faded straw, thin white head, light effervescence, clear, light lacing; nose: dominant and disagreeable odour, slight hops, corn; mouth: really bad but unknown taste which to my astonishment and my great pleasure disappears totally in that really short finale, thanks to the brewer for this, a bit of corn, a bit of hops, thin, watery texture, lightly acrid; overall: once in a lifetime is sufficient FRANÇAIS Canette, 355 ml, « cadeau » de Marc Gratton, « savourée » le 27 avril 2007; œil : paille léger, petite mousse blanche, légère effervescence, claire, légère dentelle; nez : odeur inconnue dominante et désagréable, très léger houblon, maïs; bouche : goût inconnu très désagréable mais, à ma grande stupéfaction et mon plus grand des plaisirs, ce goût disparaît totalement grâce à cette finale très courte, coup de chapeau au brasseur pour ce tour de force, assez carbonatée, un peu de maïs, un peu de houblon, mince, texture aqueuse, légèrement âcre; en résumé : une fois, c’est assez

Served at the Pgh Bottleshop Cafe in Bridgeville. This was in a big 16 oz aluminum bottle! Beautiful blue and silver label aesthetics. Date code is 1861. Pour is darker than your typical ubiquitous pale yellow lager, more brownish. No head, just a froth on top. Aroma is slightly sweet. Flavor has a slight tinge of bitterness. Interestingly industrial background qualities in there. Finish is non offensive, quite friendly and lagerlike. THis beer can easily be enjoyed, it lacks any hints of that tough Iron City. There are other economy beers out there that are much cheaper and just as enjoyable. Augustiner lager’s sister beer Old German comes to mind. Overall OK, but the taste leaves something to be desired after the looks of this beer were so darkish.

Since 2007 I have tasted this again made by city brewing in latrobe. A little more rude and has a little bit of a gag reflex going on. previously I gave this a 2.3 but now its luckey to get a 1.9.------- 2007: 12 oz can that proudly states it’s purpose. I love these Pittsburgh Brews that have the superlatives on them. Pop the lid for a yeasty beery aroma backed with metallic hints. Ubiquitous pale yellow american beer color - no kidding. The taste is a little more forward than I’m used to with good lagers. The American light seems to be a better, more well behaved brew. Some bitter hints and I’m not sure if it is malt, hops or whatever. Finish is a bit industrial and come to think of it, a little like Iron City. Nice carbonation. Much better tasting than Big City Ice. Not bad for an economy beer. They should put this stuff in bottles and ship it across the United States to the Mexican Border. Overall, OK for an economy beer but there are others out there for about the same price that taste much better. It’s sister beers Light Brigade and old German is the same price and much more palatable.

When I was twenty something , in 1977 or so, we used to drink cases of this stuff. Good beer at a decent price. How many pale yellow lager American brews can you think of that fit those specs and are not currently owned by BMC? After 20 years I bought another case. So, I rate as I drink. I am proud to be a drinker of Pgh Brewing beers, support your local breweries! Don’t serve this cold, it needs to be drank at about 50 degrees to appreciate its full flavor. How about the name ‘Old German’! Quite an attitude toward the German beers. 12 oz artistic white can with the statement that ‘the world knows no finer’ - how confident and nifty. When you pop the lid you get a sour citrus wiff. Into the glass it turns more into a light yeasty beer aroma. Ubiquitous pale yellow lager colors with steady streams of mixed medium and small quickly rising bubbles, champagne in nature. Head is thin white and clean. The initial taste is pilsner in flavor. It is very well behaved and gentlemanlike in it’s etiquette. An above average tasting lager, clean and fresh. Not much personality, it is more kind and refined than those bitter beers. This is one of Pgh Brewing’s better entries. It lacks the metal-ness so often found in most Iron City beers. Now that I’ve rated a few beers, I don’t think I would even think of this as a Pgh Brewing drink, it is less offensive. The finish is non-assuming and enjoyable, it seems to have the qualities of a light brew. Brilliant, this is the United States answer to those pale yellow German lagers. In Pittsburgh, we can do it better, or at least just as good, at a lower price. Overall, a very above average German style lager that is almost as smooth as many wit biers! I am very surprised of the smoothness! I can’t believe I was a nullifidian before drinking this again after so long! After looking at the rest of these ratings, I’m curious if I just got a good batch or something. I’ll have to get another case in a few months and try again as to confirm my good findings.

Brigade, the big brother of light Brigade. 12 oz pop top can. This is another good economy brew from Pittsburgh brewing tho it says ‘Major Systems’ on the side of the can. I have drunk many cases of this brew over the years but this is not a ticker from memory, I am actually drinking as I write. When you pour this brew into your mug you get the wonted pale clear yellow american beer color. The aroma is fairly yeasty like uncooked bread dough. I think I do detect a hint of fruitiness in the olfactory also. The taste is gentlemanlike with little offense. There is however a slight hint of industrialness in the background, almost like mild Irom City. You certainly can tell they are made by the same company. This brew is more tasty and definitely has more personality than the brigade light. Very good very mild and easy to drink. The finish has a tincture of metal to it again, reminiscent of mild Iron City. Not bad for a beer that only costs 33 cents per can, got to be one of the best buys in the pale yellow lager arena. Right up there with Stella Artois and Molsons Golden. Much better than many of the ubiquitous pale yellow lagers out there.

For a dark lager, this has some competition, shiner bock, killians and michelob amber boch; not too bad for macro brews. Wainwrights eye is peeken out from between the evil and the eye. 12 oz pop top can. Popped to release a slight sour aroma. Aroma is a little industrialized with metal hints. Pours darker than a pale yellow american beer but I don’t think this really qualifies as dark. Transparent with a couple small stream bubble originations. Now it does have a sweet hint in the smell. Head is alabaster and fades after a few minutes. Taste is not offensive but different in a Pittsburgh kind of way. Gentleman lager personality. This is definitely a good buy in the american lager arena. Price is half that of most other dark american lagers tasted. Finish is tingly on the back of my tongue. No real overwhelming or persistent linger. Not bad. On par with negra modela and lieny’s red.
