Description
Abdij Maria Toevlucht (Our Lady of Refuge Abbey) belongs to the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, better known as the Trappists. The abbey was founded on 14 September 1938 when the priory of Zundert was elevated to the status of an abbey.

In 2009, careful consideration led to the decision to start a small brewery. A small brewery, because: ‘monks brew to live and do not live to brew’. Building work began in 2012. Following extensive preparations, the plans were implemented between October 2012 and October 2013. The brewery was built within the existing contours of the former buildings of the De Kievit farm. These buildings also house the workplaces. ‘Zundert Trappist’ beer was introduced on the market in December 2013.

Bottle from Brygshoppen. Nice head with good duration. Color is dark brown. Aroma and taste are rich malt, caramel, nuts, dried fruits and hops. Nice malty finish.

330ml bottle picked up in the La Trappe monastery shop. Drunk at Roadburn. Pours a misty amber, good white head. Aroma of a spicy rye malt leaning, continues to taste and brings to mind a malt-driven English bitter with soft dried orange fruit tangents. Didn't really expect this from a trappist monastery. Ok.

It is symply a delicious trappist beer, if you drink at 10-12 degrees. The taste is with malt, main presence of honey, flowers and hop. 29.01.2017, drinking it at home Lausanne, Prélaz.

Color marrón cobrizo oscuro, forma corona de espuma beige de no mucha retención. Aroma a caramelo, pan negro, malta tostada, ciruelas maduras, uvas pasas, nueces...
En boca es densa, completa, robusta, cálida, de entrada dulce y acaramelada, final amargo y seco, rica en matices, licorosa, pide trago corto y reposando. Buena cerveza

Taking this bottle from Amstein, St-Légier and opening it yesterday, best before 05/22, a long time in my cellar. This one was perfect at night, at the balcony, before to sleep, better at the final, smooth, sweet, spicy, sugar, plum, grapes, subtle. 31.08.2022

330ml bottle as part of a delivery from RAD Beer and drunk at home. Mid-brown with a touch of translucency and a big, slightly thin off-white head. Wonderfully overwhelming aroma of raisins, figs, brandy, sweet spice, caramel. Achingly sweet taste: raisin, plum, love cake. Medium body with softer carbonation than I expected.overall a very good quad.
