I can’t pronounce this. Is it Tee-yee-yeendeh-ya-ahrs?? September 2004 bottle drunk 3/28/05. Pours with tons of light-yellow, cream colored head, with tons of lacing and plentiful retention. Body is an opaque (highly unfiltered) deep caramel mixed with deep-auburn, with some slight dark violet tinges. Ultra-small bubbles rise up through the beer. First, and many subsequent, whiff is blackberries, currants, currant skins and light S’mores (yes that’s really what I smelled, almost a chocolate-caramel mix with a bit of cookie sweetness). Very unique aroma, quite full and lasting. Flavor starts with light caramel malt flavors, maybe caravienne and/or dark candi sugar. Notes of tart blackberries come through quickly and there is a touch of wateriness on the end. Medium-full body, with a very soft carbonation, that allows for a smooth, unbroken palate experience. The more I drink, I’m getting some slight funk/carrots. Could it be Special B malt? Seems so. Light earthiness on the finish, with some light hops flavor and a touch of drying alcohol. The earthiness, hops and alcohol combine to make it just a bit too drying/astringent on the finish, but it’s only a minor flaw. The aroma and complex flavors and immediately perceived maltiness are fantastic. I loved it and will be buying more. Brouwerij ’t IJ is now 3/3 in my book. I wonder if they can keep it up!

An unclear orange beer with a white head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of yeast and coriander. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of yeast and lesser notes of caramel, orange, coriander, and other spices. It prickles the tongue, and has a dry end.

Bottle Hazy, orange body. Off-white rocky head, mostly lasting. Spare lace. Hops and yeast (lightly) in the aroma. Lightly bitter, lightly sweet initial flavour. Moderately bitter finish. Very well-balanced, lovely beer.

4/2004 bottle. Pour reveals a medium amber-caramel colored body, with light oranges, coppers and golds all noticeable. Large, well-retained head, per usual for the brewery, with plenty of sediment remaining in the bottle. Aroma has notes of strong belgian yeast, light candi sugar and plenty of caramel malt. Light raisins and berries. Flavor parallels the aroma quite well, with lightly sweet caramel and raisins, figs and dates on the finish. A low amount of residual sugar does not give it too sweet a flavor. Lately I’ve been turned off by high abv BSAs, due to the powerfully sweet and warming nature of them, but this one hid the 9% abv nicely and was more restrained in flavor. Giving the beer time to breath creates a soft mouthfeel. A bit of oxidation from the age loosens up the body, but it makes it surprisingly drinkable for a 9% BSA. So far, T’Ij is 2 for 2 in my book. Excited to try more.

Dark mahogany color; very big head. The high carbonation and some sour aroma let’s suppose a light infection or fermentation problem, then confirmed when tasting it. It seems to be, behind that, a solid beer, with good body, caramel flavor and high bitterness.

Dark amber color; big head. Aroma of malt and vegetables. Good body, light fruitness, quite spicy, sweetness, malt but not enough. Strong bitter final, a bit alcoholic.

Many aromas and they are all good. Nutmeg, yeast, wheat, pears, and apples. Cloudy orange with a huge Duvel-like head. Flavor is complex like the aroma. Citrus, wheat, more pears, and nutmeg. Light spices I can’t identify. Delicate. Smooth but not very full body. Think Tripel Karmeliet but slightly lighter.

Just hit the shelves, this must be a 2004 bottling. Deep orange-copper pour, very murky, with lovely large bubbles bursting to the top lazily. Foamy white head, which sticks around in clumps. And now for the single most exciting word in brewing: UNPASTEURISED Yes, ungefiltered and unpasteurised it proudly (well I’m proud anyways) displays on the label. Great, this should be fun. As I slowly swirl the beer to reduce some large head formations, a scent of strong yeast, candi sugar and curacao greets my nostrils. In for the ride are the plentiful malt sweetness (honey, lightly toasted almonds, sweet peaches), and a ever so faint touch of alcohol. Being encouraged, I begin to drink quickly. Mmmm, live beer. Plenty of funky yeast notes collide with a whopping dose of sweet malt and much of the citrus from the aroma, though it is a more sweet orange flavor, not bitter. Alcohol is only slightly evident for a 9% beer, and the body is medium-full, with a pleasant bottle conditioned carbonation. Finish has some light tropical fruits, hints of caramelized sugar, more candied oranges and a big dose of pepper, perhaps grains of paradise. Damn, I’m angry I’ve waited this long to enjoy this brewery. And while this beer may be overall, a bit too sweet and prone to using force to display its flavors, I am instantly a fan of the brewery and will be hunting their other beers down. Bet this ages wonderfully (will be testing that theory).

Very dark brown beer with some redder highlights; good yellow-brown head, reasonably stable. Chocolate, vanilla, brambles, fruit sherbet, liquorice, dark malts - very complex, aromatic nose. Leafy, earthy, even mushrooms, chocolate & tobacco flavours in the taste. A bit of banana, estery, faint woody. More marked liquorice flavour retronasal. A bit disappointingly light MF, faint velvety texture. As if an originally fuller beer has been diluted. Great, complex Bock. All the more remarkable seen the use of bio ingredients, usually much less flavourfull. Good show.

The aroma is lovely of peaches, coriander and other spices as well as some sharpness from the yeast and alcohol. The color is hazy orange and it has a beutiful though disappearing beige head. The flavor is of caramel, oranges, yeast, and coriander. A nice beer.
