Description
OWA beer was born in May 2006. It was born and designed for the best Belgium and Japanese fusion food experience. It is indeed a very good combination with SUSHI and YAKITORI (weet soy sauce). The brewery is located in the famous district of Uccle in Brussels, only 2kms from the Moeder Lambic in Saint Gilles. Leo Imai started to brew in December 2008 and in 2009 he made a kitchen laboratory in the brewery, and researched the best marriage with japanese food.

Many thanks for this beer to JefVerstraete. Piana ladna drobno ziarnista, spora i bardzo trwala. Kolor czerwono brazowy, malo metne przeswitujace. Smak juz slabiej, przypominal zwyklego dunkela, rozwodnione, slodycz i nagazowanie jak w Pepsi. Zabraklo nut palonych typowych dla stouta. Za duzo karmelu, malo wyraziste i malo wytrawne. Cale szczescie ze alkohol chociaz dal sie ukryc.

Limitedly produced plum lambic, made at De Troch for OWA, the beer company owned by a Japanese entrepeneur based in Brussels. Very loose, light ’dirty pinkish’, irregular head dissolving in instants to practically nothing; misty peach blonde robe with salmon pinkish hue, limited but still visible fizz; becomes all murky and ’muddy’ with the sediment added. Somewhat ’musty’, unusual aroma of fermenting yellow plum, buttermilk, wry grape peel, unripe gooseberry, wet wood, a lot of dust, cherry stones, sweet curry spices, old rosé wine, roses, pickled gherkin, moldy orange, cooked beetroot, carrot even, pumpkin seeds, wet cardboard, salted tomato - definite lambic traits here, lots of stonefruit, but also something weirdly ’pickled’ which may be intentional, considering the fact that Japanese ume plums are indeed often used pickled in local cuisine. Lively fruit sourness in the onset, sharp and somewhat puckering lemon acidity paired with a more ’deeply’ wry unripe green plum and sour berry tartness; under this sourness lies a subtle touch of peach sweetishness. Carbonation remains soft, not ’flat’ like an unblended lambic, but certainly not as fizzy as a geuze either - more in the range of a ’luierik’ (insufficiently refermented geuze). Mouthfeel is otherwise supple and pleasant, with some soft wheat sourishness and lightly bready barley sweetishness underlying an ongoing stream of sour, unripe and even wry stonefruit, drying the palate; the actual fruit sourness and wryness pairs well with the lemony sharpness and sedate lactic tartness of the lambic. Finish adds a touch of wet wood and a late, brief, ’deaf’ and earthy accent of hop bitterness, but it is the wry unripe plum tartness which dominates till deep down in the throat. Interesting idea to put sour plums in a lambic and like the others in this series, it highlights elements of Japanese culture and cuisine in an altogether Belgian lambic context. It took me a while to get used to the aroma and I still think it tastes better than it smells, but I love all things (unsweetened) lambic and this to me is a worthy addition to the still expanding range of variations on the sour fruit lambic theme. From a more technical point of view, however, this clearly would have been a lot better if it were better carbonated...

Tap at WvdSG. Super murky milky golden, looks like an English cup of tea. Lots of plum skins, sour grains, a bit of plum pits, seaweed, light black tea. Medium sour and bitter, very light salty. Under medium bodied, no carbonation.

Flaske 375ml fra Vinmonopolet Tromsø - Sentrum. Drukket på Bergstua 22 Mai 16. Dobbeltkork! Den innerste har stempel fra De Troch Wambeek. Gyldengul. Lavt skum som varer litt. God blomsterduft. Smaken lett fruktig. Blir behagelig syrlig etter hvert.

Bottle, 75 75cl. 2013 vintage, bottle 862/1200. It’s an almost clear one, pale golden in color and with an off-white head. Soapy, citrusy, lemon and grapefruit, aroma with notes of bread and perfume. Even some wood notes. It’s dry and tart on the palate, medium bodied. Soapy, citrusy flavor with a perfumed, woody hint. Lots of citrus. Lasting citrus dominated finish. Overall, sure nice, but a bit soapy I think. 160102

330 ml bottle. Gusher, still almost clear, dark brown body with a huge off-white head. Mild aroma of toast and caramel. Flavor is rather sweet malt, toast, some dry fruit and yeast. Medium body and short aftertaste. Plain and straight forward, not much of a stout if that’s the intension.

330 ml bottle. Slightly unclear golden body with a big, creamy white head. Light aroma with a hint of caramel. Flavor is light caramel malt, some fruit, low bitterness and slightly spicy yeast. Medium body and short in aftertaste. Nothing wrong, but very plain and straight forward. Nothing exiting at all going on here.
