Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours somewhat ruddy amber with a creamy beige head. Smoky, nigh bacon aroma. Full bodied. Starts with bacon smoke, then sweet darkish malt, then more bacon. I can’t use smoke; someone must have flung a flitch in the kettle. Cook green beans in this. Nice. Not over done.

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark copper with a beige head. Mild brown sugar aroma. Arguably full bodied. Flavor is lightly hopped brown sugar. Malt is sticky. So it’s a pretty decent sipper. May not stand out from the pack, but it’s good.

Bomber from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours a dark blood orange color. No head. Smattering of beige foam. Aroma is sort of brown sugar/treacle, but the sugar is reminding of bacon. Weird. Full bodied. Flavor is bitter, tho lightly so, followed by treacle/brown sugar, with something almost woodily astringent, then back to the malt. There’s heat, but it’s rather elusive. Finally, smacking my mouth and considering the origins of the universe, I can imagine some baking chocolate lurking in the nether regions. I’m liking this very much.

Tap at University of Beer. Pours a very dark ruby with a ceamy beige head. Aroma is rather plummy with some dark malt that has chocolate notes. Med + body. Flavor is rather pitted fruit and I think the malt has a bit of chocolate. Plum seems to be the fruit. Heat, but only in the gullet. Very nice.

Bomber from the Nugget Market in Vacaville, CA. Pours very black with a slight dark tan head that didn’t last long. Aroma is dark roast malt, with some thing so intense it makes me think of meat. Full bodied plus! Flavor is very smooth dark roast malt, with bitterness. I think there’s coffee and chocolate. Treacle. Hop - must be. This is very strongly flavored ale. There is no trace of heat. There’s too much malt to label it dry, but it deserves to be labeled dry. It’s just that sort of thing. Strong flavors; bitterness; malt struggling to assert itself. I will not be surprised to find this getting impressive awards. Think I’m getting some hop burn with time. Incredibly excellent ale.
