Bottle from Daiei. Nice bready malt and biscuit with a touch of floral clover notes. Grainy with nice malt body and balanced. Light peppery hops on the finish. Really not bad, but not as hoppy as I like my pils. Still a solid beer.

Tap at BBS 2015. Amber-orange, flat. Nose of cedar, honey, stoen fruits. Wood flavor of cedar, peaches, orange, honey. Almost flat, silky, soapy. Interesting, and the right about of cedar (just a touch), but missing something. A bit more acidic would be great.

Umenishiki Arashibori, this lager seems to be made with nigori(sake) rice. Bottle from a souvenir shop in Dogo. It pours a cloudy straw gold with a thick head of white foam that lingers & leaves thick ropey lacing behind. Earthy malts, skunky hops and light fruits in the nose. Medium bodied with a scratchy carbonation. The flavor is pretty good with an initial fruitiness, earthy spice then a chalky bitter finish. Alright. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Beer Keyaki Spring 2014. Aged in Japanese Cedar Barrels, a truly original beer that pours a clear golden copper pour with a gummy beige head. The nose caramel, fruity, wood & very intriguing aroma. Medium to light bodied. The taste was very subtle wood character over a possibly Pale Ale giving a fair bitterness and some toffee. A sharp finish. This is about the malts and the wood. Probably one of their most interesting beers.

Umenishiki Biere Blanche, 5%, on tap at Bungalow for 600 yen. A slightly opaque gold pour with a thin foamy head. Wow, the nose on this is just a butt load of coriander. The aroma is just too much, pepper & coriander maybe a hint of orange peel struggling to be noticed among the spices. Nice smooth mouthfeel, soft, silky & light. The taste isn’t so excessively spiced with peppercorns, coriander & fruity orange peel playing among the wheat notes. Much nicer taste than àroma, though after awhile the nose became milder. A nicely made wit.

Draught at BBS 2014. Cloudy golden yellow, almost pastel. Way too much head on this keg. Biscuity malt nose and flavor, with lemon hops. Very bready and full on account of the yeast. Lovely. Nice bitter finish.

On tap at Bungalow, a cloudy honey brown pour with a foamy off-white head. The aroma is yeasty, with some Belgian notes. Nice full body but the flavor is ultra fruity but not in a good way, tastes like it fermented high grape juice kind of fruitiness - juice box like, then some spicy Belgian influenced notes. You don’t feel that 8.5% at all which is nice. As it warms up that estery quality starts to turn into acetone/fusel chemical flavors not fully but it is leaning that way. Not good not terrible but... judging from the ratings it looks like the latest batch was BAD I really don’t get why Japanese craft brewers release beers that obviously have issues with them... I wish I’d had a 4+ version of this beer...

Draft to a plastic cup @ Nippon Craft Beer Festival 2014. Pours hazy brown like an Estonian home-brew. Aroma is a bit funny, has characteristics of a home-brew, also smells like a sweet candy. Taste.. is like a home-brew - which is not bad per se but does not also communicate too much sophistication. Some sweet candies diluted in this brew, not sure if I like them. It has some unpleasant bitter background base - as if this beer is made from a beer condensate or something. Aroma has not been achieved with hops here - or something has gone amiss. Pretty terrible actually, needed to force myself to finish this small cupful.

Bottle. Aromas of caramel, biscuits, earth, strawberry, chocolate. Cloudy orange-amber color, medium head going right to lace. Sweet flavor of molasses, honey, caramel, marachino cherry, strawberry. Alcohol to balance, falls a bit short. Quite sweet, almost cloying but not. Thick, rich palate without being syrupy. Very well done powerful, sweet strong ale. Not Belgian at all, and not oxidized line an English strong ale either. Interesting and original. Malt complexity is almost bock-like, but fruity like an ale.

Nose of banana, coriander, and mild citrus. Deep cloudy golden color with a fine but sturdy-looking head. Spicy banana flavor, citrus, rich wheat. Relatively flavorful and rich. Slightly flowery at first, then deep banana, then sour, citrus finish. Very well put together. Relatively big mouthfeel, enjoyable for winter. Better than expected. A nice wit without the faults of so many: neither over-spiced nor over-sweet.
