2-3 year old beer Slightly hazy, dull foxy-orange beer with an amberish head, fast dwindling to 0.5 cm. A short cookie-caramel-biscuit nose and then - oh horror - belegen old Dutch cheese. Or sweaty feet, if you "prefer"... Old hops, no doubt. Fortunately, it diminishes in strength, but gets notes of drain water, with a dash of old wine, instead. Strange, vaguely herbal to decaying vegetable taste. Vestiges of caramel, cake bottom, light-coloured malt. Ends as a dry soldatenkoek . Surprisingly titillating MF, due to still lively carbonation. Seen all the signs of tiring, quite surprising item. For the rest, the beer is dead. Obviously totally ruined beer - after only scant years? The initial nose was repulsive. Oh, well, retired.

Bottled(330ml). -Dark coffee coloured, medium sized beige head, sweet honey wheaty nose. Aroma of coffee, caramel, yeast and honey with mild fruity and smoked notes. A way too sweet but but quite nice and tasty porter.

5 months past its BBdate Orange-foxy beer with crème coloured, indeed very creamy medium head. Nutty, milk chocolate, biscuit and sweet sherry, some chocolate bar with caramel à la Mars or Milky Way, and a faraway greenery smell. Oxydized, nutty, less sweet than the nose made me fear. A bit frutiy, dried, sugar-laden fruit, apricots or sugar-preserved oranges. It’s nowhere bad, not a bit flat, and not complex enough for its power. Well-bodied, syrupy, nearly-viscous. Alcoholwarming prominent. A beer at 9.5% ought not to be oxydized after 2.5 years. I suspect it was better fresh, but it has shown its weakness, not saved by all its ABV strenght. Thanks Dean!

Light amber color. Light aroma. Smooth mouthfeel; ordinary flavor, where some malt and hop mix to give a very common ale (the simplest Strong Belgian Ale), without character, with a quite strong final.

Bottle 0,33l at The St Albans Beer Festival 29 Sep 06. Dark brown coloured. A creamy lasting tanned head. Cautious aroma with some malt. An explosion in flavour! Fruit, malt and roastedness. A lingering dry bittersweet aftertaste. A morish beer.

330ml bottle ongefilterd. Frothy and bubbly off-white head. Hazy, pitch black body. Dark malty aroma with anise notes. Aroma has got a solid component of dark fruit - plums and prunes - with hints of roasted malt and yeast towards the end. Full bodied. Tasty (enjoyed at the 11th St Albans Beer Festival 29.09.2006).

Bottled (BB 01/2008). Slightly hazy amber color, small firm off-white head. Strong fruity (mango) aroma with hints of rye. Quite simple flavour palette for strong ale here: mango, apples and alcohol. Even this is not so complex, it is reasonably enjoyable to sip, long fruity and warming aftertaste. Caesar put it well: Erik de Noorman’s flavours are close to La Trappe Quadrupel (or some other La Trappe), same yeast used?

Warning! My bottle was a sample from the second trial brew. If the commercialized product proves different, I’ll try a new rating. Fully hazy brown with red-amber highlights; small yellowish, very fine head as whipped cream, leaving rings of lace. First impression is leafy/earthy, then an overwhelming onslaught of chocolate, dark chocolate powder and cacao booms. Quite bitter taste, chocolate, but also quite some hops. Malty, nowhere sweet, until after some serious warming up. Dry beer, a bit fizzy. In the aftertaste, warming up, some mild melassy sweetness. The chocolate reigns in the aroma, but is very meek in the flavour. Whatever, nice beer.

Bottle (thanx to bierkoning !): Dark amber coloured, stable, firm tanned head; strong, sweet, spicy and fruity (sultanas, mushrooms...!) nose; stronger sweet and a bit sourish flavour; warming, sweet, later tart and slightly bitter finish. O.K., but a bit too much on the sweet side.......

A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet with a slight note of acidity from the roasted malt, but also a light note of coffee. The flavor is sweet with over ripe fruit notes and prunes, leading to a dry wood and roasted end.
