Description
The Cromarty Brewing Co is a family run business consisting of Craig, Chap and Jenni Middleton. Craig, our fanatical founding brewer studied the science of brewing at Heriot Watt University and the art of beer making in the student accommodation and flat basements. After finishing the course he went on to do some work in various breweries to gain valuable experience. It was during this time that he decided he wanted to get his own beers to market.

In the spring of 2011 construction of the brewery started on the shed works and some awesome stainless steel was ordered from Bavarian Brewery Technologies. Hectic times and long hours later led to the first of the casks rolling out on the 19th December 2011.

Bottle from Westhill Service Station. It pours clear dark reddish - brown with a small khaki head. The aroma is rich and malty, toasted brown bread, malt loaf, molasses, dull vanilla fudge, toffee, bourbon soaked oak, raisin, sultana, fug jam, plum compote, port wine and toasty brown sugars. The taste is firmly dry upfront, sappy, warming booze, resinous, bitter - sweet, sticky green pine, resin, oily orange, raisin, sultana, red grape, some spice, earthy, toothy, chewy, bourbon soaked oak, tannin, red wine, damp herbal accents and wood with a drying finale. Medium body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Big and toothy. Maybe a touch drying, but enjoyable.

Clear, dark amber with a solid head. Malty aroma. Flavour is malty first, with some toffee and a bit of biscuit, but it's the malt which leads the show and lingers. Very sessionable.

Can from Fountainhall Wines, Aberdeen. It pours cloudy soft orange with a bubbly white head. The aroma is fresh and bright, green, herbal, dry wood, blast of tropical fruits, passion fruit, peach, tangerine, nectarine, and a touch of spice. The taste is crisp, dry, snappy, pleasing and satisfying bitterness which lingers, damp herbal character, weedy, spicy, dry oak, pithy, zesty, butter orange peel, grapefruit, five alive fruit juice, passion fruit, peach, unripe mango, floral vibes and a just a nip of alcohol with a drying, citrus rind finish. Medium body and moderate, yet soft carbonation. I miss when ipas (even hazy ones) were bitter like this. Nice hop expression. Robust and flavourful. Tasty.

Can from Against The Grain. Hazy orange body with an off-white head that holds well. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of pineapple, grass and passionfruit. Flavour of grapefruit and lemon with a bitter, tangy finish. Medium body with a slick texture. Light fizz. This is a brilliant showcase of the Harlequin hop; I had no idea how tropical and punchy it is.
