500ml bottle. Minimally cloudy golden colour with huge, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Now, that is hoppy aroma: piney, coniferous in general, citrusy, some grapefruit etc. Taste is bitter hoppy, some pine, some "green" and earthy notes of grass, straw and moss. Obviously no support by a robust malty backbone and therefore some of the hop hits blankness.

Tap at Port Street Beer House, Manchester. Hazy, orangey amber. Thin, lasting, white head. Overripe, peachy, sweet, fruitiness. Gingernuts dunked in milky tea. Or summat. I’m getting Weird Bearded here! Thick, oily palate. B&B half a grapefruit, with sugar, and a maraschino cherry on top, finish.

Bottle from Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Nearly black. Thickish, tan, lasting head. High cocoa solids chocolate. Coffee grinds. Liquorice. Dark, unripe fruit. Taste has fleeting sweetness, followed by a burnt, tarry, roast bitterness. Smooth, almost creamy palate. Ash dryness on the finish, as well as a hoppy, tarry bitterness. Really good.

Bottle from Beer Central, Sheffield. Hazy, lumpy, orangey amber. Patchy, sticky, lasting, white head. Yer genuine fruit salad sweet aroma. Light, fresh, mintiness. Very light spiciness. Taste is brown sugar sweet to start. There’s a light, fudgy, maltiness running through. The bitterness comes by way of a light grapefruit hoppiness that balances everything beautifully. Palate is fresh and lively, with a slip of oiliness. Finish is zesty, fresh bitterness. A delight.

Bottle. An unclear, golden-orange beer, some floaties too, topped by a dense, creamy beige head. The aroma has some sickening notes, with sweet maltyness and citrusy, orangey hops. The flavor has a nice bitterness, some alcohol hints, orange and pine cones. Rather sweet, full-bodied and warming. Lasting finish with bitterness and sweetness and some alcohol. Well, not my kind of DIPA. 140228
