Odd brew from Westbrook, so you gotta give them some credit on the curiosity factor alone. But it drinks pretty well, too, the smoke and sour creating a surprisingly tasty combination that reminds me of Carolina-style vinegar-based barbecue sauce. Whether that’s good for a beer or not remains open for debate, but this brisk, smoky little tart brew seems to argue strongly in the For column. It’s not pretty beer, and could use a little more carbonation to keep the smoke from growing oppressive as the beer warms. Whatever the fuck that means. And, yes, it does smell a lot like ham. Tasty regardless, and more proof that Westbrook really, really knows how to handle sour beer.

Cloudy light amber color, with some orange. The aroma is peculiar; there is a good balance of mild resins and fruits (tangerines…); light incense, talc; later, some mature apples. Good mouthfeel, smooth and round; the caramel and toffee flavor is sweetish, but more evident is the fruity character, mango and tangerines; there is a mild yeast character too; the moderate sweetness is a good combination with the fruits, it makes a easy-drinkable beer, more drinkable than the medium alcohol content suggests. Long final, still with good presence of bitter oranges.
Maybe a bit rough, but very pleasant. And it comes in cans!

Tap at the Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. Pours deep brown with a strong, light tan foam head. Tons of buttery toffee in the nose, with sugary licorice and ripe fruits as well. Medium sweet and lightly tangy with grapes and cherries. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Tangy on the finish, which cuts into the booze pleasantly. There are also notes of faint buttery toffee and dark sugars at the end. The condition of this beer is questionable. And the beer definitely doesn’t have the depth of complexity that a quadruple should have. A mixed bag here.
