Huge thanks to Erzengel for that one! Bottle looks simple but good. Beer in the glass with a nice head. Starts mild, malty, sweetish. Hints of some herbs, some spices. Sugar. Finish well balanced, not too grasy-bready, shy hoppy background. Interesting!

33 cl. bottle @ home, gift from Luc.
Clear dark brown with a beige head. Dark caramel aroma with whisky notes and red fruit. Sweet taste with a sweet boozy finish. Bit flat and underwhelming, not up to the usual Gulpener standard.

Unfiltered and somehow slightly less strong special edition of Gulpener's classic Dort, a very Dutch interpretation of German Dortmunder (Export) which was particularly popular in the Low Countries from the fifties to the eighties, but was usually executed as a sweeter, darker and stronger version of pils, see e.g. Haacht's Adler for a Belgian equivalent. Thanks to Hinke for sharing! Thick and frothy, off-white, shred-lacing, stable head over a misty 'dark blonde' beer, a deep golden with amber hue (and even a somewhat pale brownish tinge in the end). Aroma of lightly toasted bread, breakfast cereals, drying grass, a touch of honey, ferrous spring water, dried tree leaves, vague tea, iron and apple. Clean, rounded onset, moderately carbonated, with very slick mouthfeel, indeed notably fuller than standard pils; cereally core with a thin yet persistent, faintly honeyish sweetness on top as well as a light iron-like but not completely unnatural metallic aspect at the sides. Mild herbal hoppiness in the finish, a tad teabag-ish, providing very little bitterness (but the style does not require this anyway, of course). Indeed a very oldskool Belgo-Dutch style Dort, so not at all a German one, which is nearly identical to Helles - in fact, if judged by purely German standards, this one is strong, dark and malty enough to be called a Märzen rather than a Dortmunder, albeit in an overly sweet way; as said, however, in a twentieth-century Limburgian context, this should meet the expectations of those who remember the old-timey Dortmunders that were brewed in this part of the world. And in Limburg, many of those original consumers seem to have been miners... Historically interesting beer, in all, glad I tasted it.

Lichte body. Iets bittere afdronk. Best plezierig.

300ml bottle. Cloudy, orange golden colour with small to average, dense, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Cautious, minimally grainy, wheaty malty and yeasty fruity aroma, some banana; a late, spicy touch of coriander. Taste is sweet-ish, minimally grainy, wheaty and pale malty, slightly yeasty fruity, minimally bitter, grassy hoppy, hints of banana, a touch of baked banana, honey; some lemongrass and a touch of coriander in the finish.
Creamy texture, smooth and soft, minimally cloying palate, fine, soft carbonation.
Rather cautious, almost a tad insipid - not really convincing.

330mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma has a nice, lightly smoky, whiskey barrel character, Belgian yeast, and light esters. Flavour is rather muted: there’s some whiskey barrels, light esters, earthiness, and soft bready notes. The flavours just don’t gel well, and there’s just not much nice here flavour-wise. Rather disappointing.

330mL bottle. Pours brown with a beige head. Dark berries, chewy toffee malts, and a bit of whiskey on the nose. Flavour has a fairly muted yeast expression, chewy dried berries, boozy whiskey finish. Pretty clumsy, not a huge fan.

Bottle. Color: Lightly hazy amber, brown-ish off-white head. Aroma: Malty, caramdl. Taste: Malty, caramel malt, some candy sugar, lightly citrus hop. Hints of nuts. Moderate sweet, light to moderate bitterness. Medium body, just below average carbonation. Ok but a bit too sweetish.
