Gravity cask at the brewery. Murky brown color, scant tan head that disappears quickly. The berries add a bit of flavor and tartness and complexity to the beer that puts it a notch above the regular version. Tones down the booziness a bit as well. Both versions were listed as 10.6 abv at the brewery.

Cast at Meridian Pint. Very dark maroon, almost flat. Aroma of rich vanilla, dark chocolate. Taste is very smooth dark chocolate, hints of bourbon around the edges. Very rich, nicely balanced, and not over the top.

On cask at Churchkey. Poured a pitch black color with a small brown head. Aroma was roasted, toasted chocolate malts, with some bittersweet chocolate notes. Flavor was a robust one with plenty of cocoa notes, almost a creamy texture to this one. Alcohol is well hidden in this particular brew.

Had this at RFD after the Snallygaster Beer Fest in Washington DC. Poured a cloudy, hazy yellow color with a solid white head. Aroma was certainly basil, with plenty of notes of sweet grains and some citrus tartness there. Lemon is there in the flavor, surrounded by notes of basil, yeast notes.

On tap at Birch and Barley. I see the other ratings of this from my DC brethren and maybe I got a bad pour. Pours a clear amber with some tight white head. Nose is a little trashy, dried leaves, some crystal malt, some sugar, a little root veg. Flavor was overly sweet, to me it appeared to be under attenuated (if that’s possible at 6.6% abv), a little chewy malt, some light citrus. Watery, slick finish.

Tap. Pours opaque brown-black with almost no head and little lacing. Aroma is espresso dominated, with dark roasted malt, whiskey, kahlua and a bit of alcohol. Flavor is quite sweet, espresso & dark roasted malt. Finish is light coffee-bitter. Nice, but less complex than the original.
