Notes from June 2009 Bottle #1079, purchased at Liquor World in Cambridge for something close to $9. Shared with the last couple of troopers in Queens Saturday night. Poured into my Yard's mug. Rich, robust, coffee creamer-colored head. Black/brown oiled body. Smells of burning hot chocolate, mineral oil, & newspaper ink. Taste is stiff with whiskey. Oak & charcoal try to back it up, but it all falls flat after just a little peated grain show up. Very bland overall. Sticky, almost gooey texture. Though not as pleasant as it sounds. Thick & minimally carbed. A very iffy beer that I was really looking forward to. : -

Pours a slightly hazy dark amber from a tap, thick foamy white head. Nondescript fruit aroma, and flavor, rather sweet. Not too much in the way of a rye note. Good beer.

Can (2/5/21) pour from Table and Vine, West Springfield. It's an opaque black (dark brown at the bottom of the glass) with light sparkle at the edges of the glass, finger-width foamy light brown head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is moderately strong roasted earthy malts with vanilla and milk chocolate. Taste is roasted malt and coffee bordering on char, tart quality (does this have lactose that's not listed? and did it go bad?). Mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied with thin, smooth, frothy texture, average carbonation with late lively zing and bitter roasted finish. Overall, oats add a little to the texture but not much else. Taste doesn't deliver on aroma and what's with the tart quality? A little over carbonated.

22oz bottle. Admittedly, my family said this was likely a year or two old. Gushes then pours a murky sepia with tons of off white head. Nose isn't great, raisins and caramel. Flavor is caramel and butterscotch, lots of sweetness. Finishes cloying. Woof.

From Oct 2008

I got this bottle in a trade with Yamar18. Thanks Kevin!

Big pop on opening the 22oz bottle but no gushing. Big 3 finger head of foam with good sticky lacing and dark brown with reddish hues in colour.

The smell...well..it doesn't smell like the typical English Brown Ale. I'm getting a lot of citrus and not much else. What is going on here?

The taste is all citrus but not bitter...it definitely leans heavily toward the sour side and everything else that could be there is overwhelmed. Weird. I love sour beers but, frankly, not in Brown Ales. I also get some notes of pepper and a slight malty taste that just pops in once in a while and disappears as quickly as it showed up. I don't think I held on to this bottle longer than I should but maybe I did.

Mouthfeel is light, carbonation is medium. Nice combo but this brew is difficult to drink for me. I can't recommend it as it is.

a little hazy, golden orange, white head, big bubbles. standard saison aroma with herbs, pepper and wheat. More chewy than I would expect for the ABV. more close to a vegetable salad thing versus a beer. the flavors.. IDK>

Light yellow. Nice clarity, lots of american hop aromas. bits of Citra and Simcoe. nice mouthfeel but the sweetness fades quickly with a flat finish. it’s good, with the finish was better.

Draft at the brewpub - MA. Pours dark brown with a foamy, tan head. The nose has soft roast, some lacto notes, chocolate. Light-medium sweet flavor with mellow ash, milk chocolate, slight earthy bitterness. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Finishes on the sweet side with further milk chocolate, restrained roast, ash, dark fruits. Tasty enough, if a bit basic.

Draft at the brewpub - MA. Pours clear gold with a creamy, white head. Simple bready pale malt nose, some cereal, ripe orange. Medium sweet flavor, a bit syrupy, with note of grainy cereal, caramel, brown sugar, minimal bitterness. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet, sticky finish with more bready malts, caramel, almost no hop presence. Somewhat tasty but lacks balancing bitterness.
