4/X/17 - 33cl bottle from Willems (Grobbendonk), shared @ home - BB: 29/VII/19 (2017-1759)

Clear to light cloudy yellowish beig beer, solid creamy off-white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: yeast, grains, cow fodder, hay, fruity touch. MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet, lactose, grains, malty, soft bitterness, bit fruity. Aftertaste: sweet touch, malty, caramel, bit sugary, slightly bitter. Not an IPA at all... Once again the beer (though this time pretty decent and without brewing errors) does not even come close to the beer style they pretend to be, as many of their ipa's and the first porter they made...

Pours unclear yellow, big to very big white head. Smell is nicely hoppy. Amarillo, yay ! Taste is sharp bitter, very grainy, hop-forward ( green hops ) some yeasty spicyness, which is never a thing I like in an IPA, but it does work with this specific one, I must admit. Rather intense bitterness. Mild funkyness. Nice

Pours rather clear blonde, extremely big white head. Smell is a bit lactic, but also a tad yeasty. Not overly intense, I expected more dryhop, for instance. Taste is sharp, bitter, mild bloody aspect.. Metallic, but not quite like I had it before in beers. The lactose definately lifts the beer up, as soon as the very intense bloody ( Can't find another word for it ) taste gets down, the lactic sweet side is quite good. The mouthfeel is destroyed by the overcarbonation. Don't suppose this was the goal that had been set when brewed. At least, thats what I hope. yet the endresult ( far , far away from what a lactic IPA is !!! ) is still drinkable...

Thanks! Sampled draft @ Modeste 2017. Sort of amped version of their Modeste IPA from last year. Hazy orange, little white. Taste is that massive hop bitterness that is typical of some newer Belgian breweries huge raw bitter grains, weeds raw grainy hop with no fruit or aromatic qualities. Taste is heavy raw bitter harsh weeds, grainy, lively harsh bitter malt, herbs, more weeds, lingering. Bit much but more interesting that I would expect from something like this, bit overkill but still some interesting weeds & bitter grains notes.

330 ml. bottle sampled @ home. BBF 04/03/19. Hazy bright citrus, disappearing head. Nose is bafflingly sugary sweet Danone yoghurt, so yoghurt heavy, baffling, some artificial cleaning product note, the ginger probably. Sparkling, bafflingly sweet yoghurt, drink yoghurt, ginger is like some cleaning product lemonade, over carbonated, like some carbonated cow milk yoghurt baffling concoction, ginger is not gingery but like some cleaning product. Baffling, gross dude like sugary cow milk yoghurt (I haven’t had those is probably close to 20 years but this is how I imagine they taste like, probably used yoghurt for the bacteria), why is it so sweet dear lord, not really getting the salt. Baffling & nasty, now I have had all 3 Belgian Gose’s that exist to my knowledge. Nasty stuff.

15/IX/17 - 33cl bottle from Willems (Grobbendonk), shared @ home - BB: 2/IX/18 (2017-1494)

Clear pale blond beer, huge aery fizzy crackling off-white head, unstable, dissipates quickly. Aroma: very yeasty, fruity notes, pear, bit soapy, pretty weird, rotting bananas, something is very very off. MF: overly carbonated, nothing but foam in my mouth, very unpleasant, even after swirling the beer around in the glass vigorously. Taste: very dusty, dead, yeast, very unpleasant bitterness, sweet, sugary, grains, malty, very soapy. Aftertaste: hoppy, fruity, lots of overripe banana, dead yeast. Worst beer I've had in a long time.

Bottle from Pyl-Blommaert in Melsele near Beveren. Gusher, foam flooding from the bottle neck upon opening - not a big surprise anymore from this brewery. Irregular, initially very thick and rocky, ’papery’ lacing, loosely knit, off-white, coarse head, eventually reduced to a bubbly ring with a pattern of flat ’islands’ in the middle, over a lightly hazy yellow blonde beer with somewhat greenish tinge. Aroma of coriander (almost more fresh leaves than the classic seeds), hand soap, starfruit, chewing gum, lavender, ladies’ perfume even, lemon candy, sugared grapefruit juice, watermelon, wet paper, green apple, hints of white pepper, tulips, pineapple, fresh cucumber, chalk. Crisp, fruity onset, sharply overcarbonated with fizzy, minerally carbon dioxide adding not too flattering sourishness to an otherwise restrainedly sweetish profile, with a lot of banana ester (even bubblegummy), some pineapple and quite a lot of green apple acetaldehyde as well; the carbonation stings and numbs the tip of the tongue to an extent where it becomes unpleasant even for a simple Belgian blonde. Slick, cereally pale malt sweetish middle with soft ’white’ bready properties to it, ongoing banana and green apple, soapy mouthfeel. Finishes crisp and minerally, with indeed the announced hop bitterness coming to full development, more so than average in this style, leafy, rooty and floral, depositing a peppery bitterness to the root of the tongue - though still relatively gently so, I wouldn’t mind a bit more of this, actually. Ends very soapy (coriandered) and bubblegummy like it began but something exotically citrussy lingers retronasally - can’t quite put my finger on it, kumquat perhaps? Too bad for the gushing and sharp overcarbonation, but otherwise an interesting blonde, differing itself from the mainstream in its perfumey, soapy profile combined with a decent ’end bitterness’. Not my beer but there is a certain degree of individuality to this, which I can at least conceptually appreciate. More or less.
