Description
Salopian Brewery first brewed in Shrewsbury in 1995. Founded by Martin Barry on the site of the old Onions Dairy and like many breweries the kit we first brewed on was small and rudimentary at only two barrels. Brewing ceased in late 1997 due to financial problems. Our chairman Wilf Nelson joined the brewery in 1998 – Wilf coming on board gave the brewery much needed stability and vision to move to forward and brewing recommenced in January 1998.

Slowly, as cash flow permitted, we upgraded our brewing kit and replaced rusty dented vans with slightly less rusty dented vans. It was the onset of brewing a more eclectic range of cask ale, whilst embracing both traditional styles and those of our locality. 2014 saw the brewery make its final move – we hope! – to the village of Hadnall on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

Bottle from my local Co-Op store. Clear gold, small white top. Aroma of cracker like malts, lemon, grass; decent freshness to it. Taste of pale malts, light biscuit edge, lemon sherbet, pepper, grassy modest bitterness. Light to medium bodied, oily, nice soft to fine carbonation. OK.

Can from Beer52. I didn't know Salopian did craft style beers as my previous 3 from them were all bottled golden ales. Pours a cloudy orange gold with small white head with good retention and lacing. Quite a fresh tropical hop aroma with mango, passionfruit and orange coming through with slight herb edge. Taste has a nice tropical and citrus juiciness with mango being at the forefront, some pine in the finish with a decent bitter punch. Good stuff.

Cask at the Post Office Vaults, Birmingham. Almost jet black pour with small consistent tanned head. Very roasty, molasses and chocolate noted with nice plum fruitiness to give it balance. Fairly full smooth body for the strength. Good.

500ml bottle from Hop Vault, Stourbridge, online. Pours a clear gold with small tight white head, lovely retention. Aroma is biscuit with a vibrant citrus and floral aroma. Pleasant. Taste has a nice pale moreish biscuit quality, a rising fruitiness notably grapefruit, some citrus, smooth, sweet but a moderate bitterness to offset, slightly dry. A balanced beer in all areas. Light, refreshing, moreish, fruity. For a 4% English Golden Ale this is stunning.

500ml bottle from Hop Vault, Stourbridge. My first beer from Salopian. Pours a clear dark gold/light amber, small tight off-white head which lasts. Aroma of pale malts, flowers, grass and citrus. Pleasant. Taste is biscuity malts, floral and citrus hops, grassy finish with a light fruity tang. Light bodied, refreshing without being watery. A very good light gold ale.
