Rerate 1/30/03: As one of the first Porters I tried, I was really impressed with this beer. Since then I have had several better Porters and I am adjusting my review of this beer accordingly. 12/30/01 (4.5): Who knew something with the word 'butt' in it could taste so good. The hint of coffee and caramel almost make you think you bought one of those fancy iced coffee drinks, except this makes you drunk! Foamy goodness.

Dark brown with a foamy white head. Clean, malty aroma with definite chocolate notes...slightly winey. Somewhat sharp mouthfeel, yet low carbonation. Sweetish, malty, with a slight caramel note. Mild alcohol burn in the finish. Very slight roasted flavors. Definite complexity to the malt profile here.

Jumps out at you with impressive coffee and brown malt (14 are used) aromas. The palate is rich and espresso-like - very robust - with a full, creamy mouthfeel. In some circles the terms ‘porter’ and ‘stout’ are considered interchangeable. Salopian brewery must be one of those circles.
