Description
Salopian Brewery first brewed in Shrewsbury in 1995. Founded by Martin Barry on the site of the old Onions Dairy and like many breweries the kit we first brewed on was small and rudimentary at only two barrels. Brewing ceased in late 1997 due to financial problems. Our chairman Wilf Nelson joined the brewery in 1998 – Wilf coming on board gave the brewery much needed stability and vision to move to forward and brewing recommenced in January 1998.

Slowly, as cash flow permitted, we upgraded our brewing kit and replaced rusty dented vans with slightly less rusty dented vans. It was the onset of brewing a more eclectic range of cask ale, whilst embracing both traditional styles and those of our locality. 2014 saw the brewery make its final move – we hope! – to the village of Hadnall on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

Cask conditioned at the Royal Oak, Oldfield Park, Bath 11/5/07. The name of this was daunting but the effect of adding lemons was not overpowering. Beer was a clear gold with slight, lacy head. Aroma was of citrus fruit hoppiness. Flavour was of lemons and grass with a slightly dry finish. Ok.

Bottle at Chris_O bottlefest 2007. Dark brown colour with beige head. Rather nice porter, very good hop on end as well. Very good porter even towards the end of the session this stood out.

Cask handpull at The Fly in the Loaf, Liverpool. Gold colour with slight haze, lasting beige head. Interesting cherry fruit flavour, dies a bit to leave an earthy juicy bitter with some interesting cherry flavoured hop. Weird, but absolutely fine.

Pours dark mahogany into an English pint. Offwhite head with excellent retention. Classic porter aromas. Toffee flavors, and a little thin which makes it sessionable. Lingering bitter smoke finish.

(Cask at Bar Fringe, Manchester, 29 July) Dark amber colour with foamy head. Malty, roasted, nutty nose with dark fruit, apricots, oranges. Slightly burnt. Malty, nutty taste with notes of hazel nuts and a dry bitterness in the finish with hints of dusty hops. Fairly neutral, but drinkable.

Schwach getreidiger Antrunk, wenig bitter, wässrig. Wenig aromatisch, bitter-semig. Trocken ab dem Mittelteil, minimal schokoladig im Hintergrund. Ein eher langweiliges Bier ohne Tiefe. Danke an den Doppelbock für die Ermöglichung des Neutests. 11/5/5/4/11/5

Half on cask at the Market Porter, London Bridge. Golden brown. Tiny little foam. Spicy, but rather poor on aroma and flavour. Notes of yeast. Flat and dry. Rather shallow and waterly (15.09.2006).

Not a black but rather a brown beer. Light aroma of petrol smoke. Some coffee, and a strong flavor of roasted malt. Light body and on the thin side. Just a little sourness in the flavor as well.
