Description
Modern Times is a 30bbl production brewery and tasting room in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850 (see “Modern Times was..” for the full explanation), and (almost) all of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias.

Keg at Modern Times tasting room, SD, 19/04/14. Black with a moderate tan swirl. Nose is light roast, subtle coffee, cocoa powder, toffee, liqourice. Taste comprises coffee, vanilla fudge, dark toffee fudge, light roast, cocoa nibs. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, smooth on the palate, coffee grinds riding on the close. Solid stout with a fairly subtle but evident coffee edge. Another well made beer from Modern Times but fail to see on the evidence of the ones I tried how they pipped Siren to be the #1 new brewer of 2013 !?!

Can picked up at CBB ages ago, haven’t seen any Modern Times around lately I hope they’re still importing it... anyways, served in a snifter this beer pours a reddish cola brown pour that’s black in glass with a foamy beige head. The aroma is roasty savory coffee. Medium-full bodied this beer has tons of coffee bean flavor, roasty, some milky sweetness then more coffee. A pretty good coffee stout with a smooth mouthfeel.

This 4.8% American Wheat beer from Modern Times pours a clear deep gold with a big fluffy off-white head. The nose is as the can says hoppy wheat: citrus, mango & floral hop notes. The beer’s smooth medium-full bodied while the taste is hoppy tropical fruits with a decent wheat presence. Not really the weizen my wife was looking for but I liked it, probably one of the best American Wheat Beers I’ve tried though it does come off somewhat like an APA or IPA.
