Description
Established 1666 - Closed 1989 - Re-established 2010 - Re-named 2022

One of the greatest names in British brewing, Truman's has been a part of London life for almost 350 years. Closed in 1989 during dark days for the brewing industry, we have been working hard to bring Truman's back to its former glory. We craft an eclectic range of great beer in cask, keg and can at our new brewery in Hackney Wick. Everything we brew, we do with with skill, belief and passion.

The brewery in Hackney Wick was closed in June 2022 but the award-winning recipes are now brewed under contract for the three venues and online sales.

From Thursday 15 September, Truman’s Beer will be known as Big Penny, following the acquisition of the trademark by the management team at the Old Truman Brewery announced earlier this year.

Cask-conditioned at the Michael Balcon (JDW), Ealing 4/1/2018. Deep amber in colour with a thin, white, head. Big citrus fruit character, some floral hops, sweet vanilla notes and a lingering, bitter, finish. Good.

Cask at the Oakford Social Club, Reading. Dark brown with a cream-coloured head. Nutty roasted malt and cocoa up front, then a hint of fruity red wine, before some dusty old barrels kick in to finish. Liked it at first, but the dust got a bit too much by the end. Still OK though.

Cask at Pig’s Ear 2017. It pours black with a small white head. The aroma is earthy, toasty, bitter – sweet, creamy, milk chocolate, vanilla, mini milk, wood and toasted bread. The taste is dry, almost tart berry skin upfront, tangy, wood, stewed fruit tea, earthy, musty, tannin and earthy coffee roast. Medium body and fine carbonation. Has a nice aroma, but the taste doesn’t match up to it.

Cask at Catford Bridge Tavern. It pours clear copper with a small white head. The aroma is fairly soft, sweet, vanilla, cream, perfumed, grass, florals and Marshmallow. The taste is very bitter, toasty grain, cereal, grass, burnt plastic, creamy aspect, straw and pithy citrus with a drying and bitter finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. A bit odd as the taste is massively bitter and quite unlike the aroma. Not sold on this.
