Established in 1882
Brains beers were brewed in the Old Brewery on St Mary Street from 1882 right up to 1999 when operating from such a tight city-centre site became unviable. Fortunately, the Cardiff Brewery behind Cardiff Central station was up for sale and Brains production moved to a new home. However exciting new redevelopments in the centre of the city have led to a further move and the building of the brand new state of the art Dragon Brewery in Cardiff Bay which was opened in March 2019.

Bottle. Amber in colour, with a slight, off-white, head. A malty bitter, with a funky edge, caramel notes and moderately bitter finish. Ok.

Ruby red with beige head. Aroma is a bit of cherry, fruity, malty, both vaguely so. Taste is marzipan and cherry, bit of malt and fruit again. Quite flat and a bit thin. Nothing very exciting.

From cask at Crosse Keys, London, 24.08.19. Translucent golden amber. Slighty sour and oxidized aroma and taste, with some grass, sorrel and malt. Sourness and some bitterness is lingering on.

Draft at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours pitch black with limited cream foam, very fine. Aroma is weak with some molasses and coffee. Body is medium dense, very smooth, with practically absent carbonation. Taste is moderate sweet. Finish is with some leftover roasted feeling.

Deep copper in colour, with a frothy, off-white, head. A malty beer, with some berry fruit and toffee, before a gentle finish with a hint of toastiness. Fine.

Draft at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours fairly transparent, reddish brown, with limited white foam, very fine. Aroma is malty, caramel, with a nice old school English hops aroma. Body is kind of thin, with very limited carbonation. This is truly British in style... Taste is medium-high sweet with delicate bitterness. Finish is average.
