Description
Emile Vanhonsebrouck and his wife Louise De Poorter founded the Sint Jozef brewery in Ingelmunster. In 1922 the brothers Paul and Ernest Van Honsebrouck take over the brewery from their mother. In 1953 Luc Van Honsebrouck (son of Paul) becomes director. Luc realizes that the small Sint Jozef brewery isn't able to compete with the large pils breweries. He therefore decides to concentrate on the production of an old brown beer, naming it Bacchus, and he changes the name of the brewery to Vanhonsebrouck. The St-Louis Gueuze and Kriek were officially launched in 1958. In 2009 Xavier Vanhonsebrouck succeeds his father Luc. In 2016 the doors of the old brewery in Ingelmunster are permanently closed. The new site in Emelgem is now home to a brand new, fully integrated brewery, with the equipment to produce all of the Vanhonsebrouck beers. In the meantime Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck becomes the new official name.

Whew. Damned sweet. Big fakish sweet cherry syrup aroma. Flavor is dominantly sweet, with a rising tartness in the middle and end. Not overly complex, dominated by the sweet cherry notes, with no bug character detectable. Seriously cloying. Interesting deep red color with pinkish head.

Bottle. Rich red color with a pink/purple head. Dusty/powdery, cherry aroma with some tartness. Sweet cherry fruit flavor with earthiness and backing tartness. Nice complexity - not too sweet. Lingering lasting fruit. Refreshing and quenching, easy to drink.

MWBF 2006: Saves me the trouble of buying another of these at the store. Sour candy peach aroma. Sweet and candyish with just a touch of sour lambic. Pale amber color. Lingering tart in the finish, but not enough to stop the cloying.

Dark blood-red purple with a foaming light purple head. Distinct cassis aroma with that unusual mix of berries, strawberry vines, dandelions and soap. Super sweet and berryish, but with almost enough acidity to cut through. Interesting mouthfeel, slick and candyish, but with a long sour twang that is vaguely tangible.

Very pronounced initial aroma of raspberry syrup. Very distinct and genuine raspberry character. Purple color with a pink fizzy head. Yowsa, way too sweet. This is basically sugar! A sweet raspberry syrup character with just a touch of acidity, but not enough to cut the sweetness. Far too sweet. Heavy, shuddering finish. Did I mention its sweet? Yuck.

Bottle, Oude Arsenaal, Antwerp, 04-10-06. Poured a very hazy golden colour. Musty and slight sharp smelling beer, taste also very sour, citrusy and dry. This was the first Gueze I’d had for a little while and I think they take a bit of getting back into again but this seemed fine enough and I would have happily had another if time had of permitted
