Description
Brewery De Graal (the name is Dutch for 'the grail') is a young Belgian artisanal, yet automated, brewery located in Brakel, in the heart of the beautiful region that is commonly called 'the Flemish Ardennes'. The brewery of graduate brewer Wim Saeyens started in early 2002, and has known a consistent growth ever since. In the summer of 2016 the brewery moved to a new building.
Continuous investments in the latest brewing technologies have made it possible for brewery De Graal to keep up with the increasing demand for high quality beers. The export market to countries such as the US, Japan, Italy and Denmark is particularly on the rise. In addition to the main activity, the brewing of six different beers under its own De Graal brand name, the brewery is also specialized in producing custom-made specialty beers.

‘Gentse kriek’, a sweet cherry beer produced by De Graal, with a name in Ghent dialect meaning threshold (but with obvious sexual innuendo); at Trappistenhuis, after years of skipping this pub without any other reason than it being a tad off-road. Thanks Meeki for sharing. Frothy and thick, pale lilac-pink, foamy head resting stable on a misty, deep ruby red beer. Aroma of red candy (‘poepegatjes’), cherry-flavoured flan, homemade red lemonade, grenadine, sandwich dough, ‘cuberdons’, cherry popsicle. Cherry jelly pudding and red candy abound in the mouth, fizzy carb, some ascorbid acidity (lemonade-like) tries to distract from that red candy sweetness but barely succeeds – and in my opinion could have better been left out altogether as it creates an even more artificial impression. Cake-doughy and cereally core, sugared cherry juice and red candy till the end, with some redeeming bready-yeasty notes in the finish but very little bitterness – and, worst of all, hardly any ‘real’ fruit aspects. This is not just a cherry beer, this is another of those awful ‘rouge’ beers: alcoholic candy for teenagers. I hate this trend, though I must admit that this De Graal interpretation of it is not even the worst around.

33cl bottle at Belgian Beergeeks/Brewver summer tasting at Tim's house. Thanks Tim. BB 09/2022.

10/IX/22 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ Belgian Beer Geek Gathering (Gent), BB: IX/2022, lot: 20265 (2022-1129)

Clear dark red beer, small creamy pink head, stable, a bit irregular, little adhesive. Aroma: sweet and sugary impression, lots of sugary cherry candy, a bit fruity, rather artificial. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet and sugary, lots of cherry flavoured candy, alcohol, bitter touch, very artificial. Aftertaste: cherry, candy, sweet and sugary, pretty oxidized, but strange enough it’s not too bad... I’ve had way worse cherry beers.
