Description
Brewery De Graal (the name is Dutch for 'the grail') is a young Belgian artisanal, yet automated, brewery located in Brakel, in the heart of the beautiful region that is commonly called 'the Flemish Ardennes'. The brewery of graduate brewer Wim Saeyens started in early 2002, and has known a consistent growth ever since. In the summer of 2016 the brewery moved to a new building.
Continuous investments in the latest brewing technologies have made it possible for brewery De Graal to keep up with the increasing demand for high quality beers. The export market to countries such as the US, Japan, Italy and Denmark is particularly on the rise. In addition to the main activity, the brewing of six different beers under its own De Graal brand name, the brewery is also specialized in producing custom-made specialty beers.

18/IV/21 - 33cl bottle as a gift, shared @ home, BB: XII/2020, LOT: 19186 (2021-302)

Clear orange beer, big creamy irregular pillowy yellowish head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: sweet impression, caramel, ripe banana, malty, hint of vanilla, smells like a properly aged barley wine! MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet and malty start, caramel notes, bit sugary, somewhat oxidized, quite a bit of cardboard. Aftertaste: bitter finish, dry, hoppy, like an aged American Barley Wine, some caramel, vanilla notes, very decent, if a bit thin near the finish. If they were to amp up the malt bill for this beer, it would be amazing!

Clear yellow appearance with lasting thin head. Aroma and flavour have a lot of spices. I think there's a lot of gale and some clove. Too spicy and herbal for me.

Clear blond colour with lasting head. Has a clean and crisp taste. Malty with obvious spicy Belgian yeast. A bit plain but inoffensive.

33cl bottle at home (13 II 2021), as Hippo Kriek. An atmost pink coloured foam upon a crystal clear ruby red liquid. The body even shows as a gloomy clear red wine, grenadine red maybe. Interesting but unnatural appearance. The nose is very dirty with some sewer hints, wet wood, stable, and lots of faint flavours of red fruit. It has a happy lambic and yeasty spirit to it. The taste is a true trump card, with light sour and light sweet balance which is just perfect. Also in the balance are malt flavours, little sour berries - perhaps redcurrants - and few tiny red candy sweets. The overall mouthfeel has lots of rose hip tea, and a very non-typical sourness. The warm finish hints at the alcohol, and has a great herbal and stinging nettles ending.

Bottle. Unclear yellow body with floaters under a big white head. Rather mild aroma of pale malt, Belgium yeast, ginger and spices. Taste is mild malt, yeast but strong on the ginger and spices in general. Medium body and ginger aftertaste. Not great, but a decent ginger ale.
