Description
Brewery De Graal (the name is Dutch for 'the grail') is a young Belgian artisanal, yet automated, brewery located in Brakel, in the heart of the beautiful region that is commonly called 'the Flemish Ardennes'. The brewery of graduate brewer Wim Saeyens started in early 2002, and has known a consistent growth ever since. In the summer of 2016 the brewery moved to a new building.
Continuous investments in the latest brewing technologies have made it possible for brewery De Graal to keep up with the increasing demand for high quality beers. The export market to countries such as the US, Japan, Italy and Denmark is particularly on the rise. In addition to the main activity, the brewing of six different beers under its own De Graal brand name, the brewery is also specialized in producing custom-made specialty beers.

Bottle 0,33ltr: And again a crazy fantastic brew from "Proef" based on a recipe from captain Cook with ingredients from New Zealand. Amber coloured and strange but good sweety taste.

33cl bottle on 21st October 2024, Cafe Botteltje, Ostend. Hazy blonde with a full on white crown. The ginger is only a minor part to play in this interesting beer (thank goodness), there is a lot going on from the first sip to the last. Citrus and yeasty elements being just two more items within the brews make up.

Tripel hop – which is usually a hoppy tripel with three hop varieties in it, inspired by the Duvel Tripel Hop family established in 2008 under influence of global hop-forward tendencies; the brand was created by GM1 Sensations, the same people that run the Geuze Leuze webshop. Brewed at De Graal, but apparently a first batch (with different label) had already been produced at De Feniks before. Snow white, moussey, frothy, shred-lacing head on a misty pale yellow to straw blonde beer. Aroma of coriander more than hops initially, soap even, white bread, freshly cut grass, moist white pepper, some unfortunate DMS (cooked white cabbage), clove and even cooked meat (4-vinyl-guaiacol), green apple peel, straw, young ‘graanjenever’. Restrained in sweetness, some unripe pear and green apple fruitiness, fizzy carbonation through a rounded grainy middle, remaining low in residual sugars; instead, a strong soapy coriander seed effect appears, while the hops add bitterness in a grassy, leafy way. A brief whiff of citrus is noticeable but otherwise the anticipated retronasal hop aromas remain very modest; warming ‘jenever’-like alcohol adds additional bitterishness. In itself decent enough, but frankly a bit one-dimensional; more expressive New World (or even Old World) hop aromas would have been welcome. Considering that this beer is something of a work in progress, if I understood its creator’s explanation correctly, it may turn out differently next time so this may be one to watch.
