Bottle from france. Creamy tight head and golden colour. Not fantastic nose or amazing flavours, but the whole is greater than the sum of the parts to deliver a wonderful refreshing strong golden ale. It is one of my favourite fridge beers

Corked bottle
Beautiful dark amber color. Simple malty aroma. Simple taste, light malt, more caramel, quite bitter. Ends not really long (and with too much caramel).

Bottled. Orange coloured, huge white foamy, very lasting head and leaves nice lacing. Malty and fruity aroma with hints of caramel. Sweet malty taste with hints of caramel. Alcohol is pretty wellhidden but shows a bit in the finish. Taste is a bit unbalanced, but still this is a very fine beer. 7 5 7 3 14
Re-rate: Bottled. Amber colour, huge beigeish bubbly head. Aroma of spices, alcohol, fruits and lots of caramellish malts. Also a bit white chocolate. Flavour is fruity, caramellish malty, creamy and spicy. Pleasant carbonation. Some roast in aftertaste, along with caramellish malts. Was even better than I remembered. Pleasant "session"beer. 8 5 7 4 15.

Hazy dark orange-amber color, huge tanned foamy head, lace. Malty, earthy aroma, also some horse blanket. Liquerish palate with the typical bière de garde earthy notes and licorice flavor. Toffeish and slightly alcoholic and metallic aftertaste. I haven’t rated so many bière de gardes but I think this is a good example of the style.

Bottle (2003 – drank in 2004): Poured a golden colour ale with a huge white bubbly head with great retention. Aroma is quite particular with a mix of spices and strong sweet floral malt. Taste is quite reminiscent of a Belgian ale (might be the spice and the sweet malt) without all the yeast. Overall, this is probably one of the top 5 beer from France but not as great as the Bière Nouvelle from the same brewery.

Darker golden beer; off-white head, dwindling. Sweet nose, as sweet pastry (patisserie), bit of lemon and faint spicey. Dry liqueurish taste, as a sweet, strong liquour, very alcoholic in character; alcoholic, spicey finish. White candi sugar. Very dry, well bodied, well attenuated. In the aftertaste, some nutty flavour detectable - maybe some madeirisation (no BBDate)? A good beer, sweet but the alcohol/liqueur taste is just a tad too sharp for me.

Clear redbrown color, medium creamy off-white head. Aroma is sharp alcoholic, caramel malty and some vinegar, very weird. Aroma is sweet and malty, light fruity, but also sour vinegar and some alcohol. Sticky palate and alcoholic finish burning in the throat.

Slightly cloudy golden coloured body with a slight white head. Aroma of bad hops, some malt - mostly a Budweiser! :-( Light bodied; Malty flavour with soapy hops and nothing else-a bad beer. Bland aftertaste showing nothing. Overall a VERY disapointing beer. I got this beer from Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia and sampled it with good friend JonR888710 on 11-April-2004.

Bottled in 2000 – drank in 2004 – The bottle opened with a big swish and poured a light brownish beer with a huge bubbly head with excellent retention. Aroma of alcohol with a mix of spice. Carbonation is perfect with lots of bubbles coming back on top of my glass. Taste is a mix between a strong Belgian ale with a mix of a good well aged port. The alcohol is mostly sensible in the aroma but undetectable form the taste. Overall, this is a beer that aged well and is true to the name “bière de garde”.
