2003 bottle Reserve SpecialePours a soft orange with some deeper tones of gold and light beige. Mostly clouded. Big off-white head. Fairly faint aroma of the typical Allagash belgian yeast, but has a nice almost nutty malt aroma. Begins fairly light, low carbonation and lots of yeasty flavor, body is light to medium, prone to wateriness, but a good dry toffee malt is slightly apparent. A bit of spiciness and a fairly light, airy texture. I think this beer is underated, as it is not trying to be a super imperial ultra deluxe premium crazily malted/hopped beer, but the balance is there (could use a bit more sweet malt) and it is very subtle. Pleasant honey spice aftertaste that lingers. Well made. 2004 bottle Summer Ale Is it me or does this stuff not really taste the same? Much fruitier, good light yeast notes, lightly chewy and very pleasant.

Thanks for Darkover for this one. Pours a hazy dark yellow color with a thin off-white head. Very little lacing. Aroma is very spicy with pepper, coriander and some citrus. Light-bodied and crisp with a spicy and fruity character, with yeast flavor as well. The finish is sweet, fruity and clean. This is a solid Wit.

(draught) Pale yellow, slight white head, lacey. Nose is citrussy, fresh orange flowers, some coriandre. Taste gives a bitter cookie-like flavour (mannah), mixed with the more classical witbier tastes. No overdose of coriandre or curaçao - OK. Light bodied - not thin. In the aftertaste, a mild sweetness appears. A better than average wit. I like the bitterish starting taint.

Batch 37. Bottle. A reddish-brown/mahogony color in a very carbonated beer. It had a weak aroma for the style. Very yeasty tasting and just not enough depth. Disappointing.

Slightly cloudy, copper-ish in color - no head on my sample, just a tiny, white lacing - aroma is of spices and dried fruits, crisp and inviting - the flavor is bold, but not overpowering - grassy, barnyardy notes - green raisins, some cherries, perhaps even plums - a subtle smoke flavor that I'm sure would make this even more enjoyable when I drink it in the cold weather - slight hops in the finish remind you that you are drinking and American-made belgian ale - quite enjoyable - this ranks right up there with their tripel, IMHO.

Dark brown. Lots of carbonation and a large head. Smokey aroma. Taste is also smokey and sweet. Heavy. Notes for bottle batch 33, aged for quite a few years. Some oxidation, malt and sugar but drying. It is starting to fade, but still good. 7/4/7/3/14

Well, i've been waiting for this one. My favourite brewery up north here, and this is the second to last one i've yet to try! Batch #4, which should be nice as everyone else seems to be rating Batch #8. I've had it for a while, and hopefully some new flavours will emerge! Great orange colour with a frothy white head. Tons of those small bubbles rising from the sides and bottom, definately what I want to see from a belgie style. The aroma is a bit of yeast, some fruit and a hint of spice. The taste is very drying and other than that not much. A major disapointment. In retrospect, it is very similiar to the one bottle of Orval I've had thus far. Great looking, decent smelling, but with absolutely no taste other than - drying. This shouldn't be a speciale and this shouldn't be from Allagash. I love them, and if you want to judge them, don't try this one!

Pours a cloudy (yeasty) orange with a thick white head. Darker than most witbiers I've tried. Aroma is spice and light citrus. The flavor was somewhat surprising, with spices dominating the palate. Surprisingly little citrus was noted, and a bit heavily carbonated. An interesting take on a witbier, though I prefer smoother, more citrusy examples.

2003 draft. Cloudy very light straw yellow color. Lighter than most whites I have seen. Smells faintly of spices, and a little bit of yeast. Small head. Begins understated and light, but body comes out somewhat and there is a very delicate coriander and lemon flavor. Yeast flavor comes out as it warms and is very light though distinct. A nutty undertone emerges as well. Very little alcohol taste throughout. Medium body and leaves a fresh lemony flavor on the palate. This was a nice change from the almost cloying Hoegarden, but perhaps takes too much out of the beer and leaves it a little bit light/watery. 2004 bottle. The description from above is surprisingly spot on for the bottle. Maybe a bit less wateriness, as expected. I'm upping the color a point as it is light and very pale, but still bottle conditioned and shimmering.

Amber color. Corky aroma, spicy (coriander). Good body, smooth; malt, caramel, a very light smokey note, very well balanced. A very good one.
