Bottle. Batch 8. Amber color with a big creamy off-white head. Slight malt and yeast aroma, but nothing really there. Spice dominates the flavor with some malt backing and some yeast. But this beer is dry - very dry - extremely dry. Low residual sugar. Probably the best thing I’ve had from Allagash so far, but to me that’s not saying much. Could use some time.

aPRIL 2004. Beautiful brown ale with a thick off-white head. Nice fruity aroma with peaches and yeast . Warm alcohol mouthfeel with licorice, spices, herbs. Very complex but not as much as Achel Extra.

Hazy amber colour body with a dense tan head. Aroma of caramel, hops, cardboard and fruits. Light-bodied; Sweet flavour withi malt and raisins coming through big-time. Aftertaste shows some clean tastes with caramel flavours throughout. Overall, great to try-thanks to Tim for bringing this! I sampled this 75 cL bottle on 15-May-2004 at the May RB Party in Toronto, Ontario.

Given my fairly low assessment of Allagash in general this was a decent beer - I am surprised that it is retired. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured an amber color with a medium sized tan head. There was a sweet, sugary scent with a hint of spice. The flavor was sweet and malty with a hint of spice. The mouthfeel was relative thick. There is a tanginess on the finish that was pleasant and very Belgian.

Rating #800.
Hazy orange-red body, thin off-white head dissipating to a faint ring of carbonation. There’s lots of stuff in this beer but the aroma and palate are only moderately complex, with apple, candi sugar, and brown sugar characterizing both. There are hints of cinnamon and clove that complement the apple and sugars. Finishes slightly leathery and with an alcohol bite. Under the sugary bliss some vinous notes take hold. A solid Quad but not a standout. Have I really come this far?

AOBF Jim Beam Barrel Aged draught. Whew! This one tastes alot like jim beam, and not alot like anything else. Extremely powerful alcohol flavor, sharp, bitter and smokey. Develops in to some coconut sweetness and has a sour finish. This delicate, lovely tripel does not seem well suited to take on such an overpowering, harsh element. Save the bourbon barrel for an Imperial Stout or Barleywine, not the abbey tripel. By the way, the bourbon aged version is going to be bottled and released, so it will probably be a new beer listing.
Rerate on draught at Redbones, 6/10/06. Flat, lifeless golden body with strong copper tones and a low clarity. Aroma is bourbon, as is the flavor. Truly domineered by the barrel, this stuff bears little resemblance to a trippel. Granted, I really need to try it in the bottle, as this is my second draught sample, but it wasnt even a question of carbonation, just brutally overdone in the barrel. 5/3/4/2/7
On draught at Publick House, Dec 2013
Certainly not as offended by this as I used to be...it is still quite bourbon-oriented and I don’t think the bourbon goes particularly well with the trippel notes. A bit too harsh, too many "bold" flavors for lack of a better term. Bourbon, banana, peaches, vanilla, alcohol. Fine if that’s your sorta thing, but just takes a lot of the finesse away from the base Trippel and replaces it with some rather forceful bourbon. Ok, enough harping out of me. 6/4/5/3/10

Batch #41. Pours a soft and somewhat dull brownish-tan. Good amount of charred white head, lots of it. Aroma of cedar, cola, vinegar, tart prunes and raisins. Tons of yeast character both in the aroma and in the actual appearance, well conditioned. Flavor has a dry and extremely yeasty profile. Light tart vinegar/fruit notes, lots of cherry cola and hints of bubble gum. Finishes with a yeasty nuttiness, chewy and thick. Body is medium-full, leaves a light chocolate flavor on the palate. I found this one to be delicious.
Batch #44. Blind dubbel tasting Aroma has plenty of yeast, light tart fruit tones, a bit more of a dusty yeastiness. Flavor is drier than I remember at first, with less overall character, but as I let it breath and warm, more sweet brown sugar-like malt appears, the yeast character remains huge and there is a light mix of chocolate and cherry cola on the finish. Carbonation is soft but evident, creating a pleasing texture. Yeast very profound. You wont confuse this one for a cheap American imitation dubbel. Interesting take, with the unique wood character quite apparent.

2004 bottle sampled in the summer 2004. Good deep brown, caramel and walnut colored. Good mocha flecked light brown head but unfortunately not bottle conditioned (that I can tell). Aroma of yeast, caramel and some light chocolate fudge notes. Big yeast smell as well. Seems a bit lifeless and stale from the filtration, but the flavors are true enough. Caramel, quite dry malting, with light hops and a finishing nuttiness with plenty of yeast in there. Well done beer, not terribly adventurous, but just good and drinkable. Alcohol is masked wonderfully. Wood like to see some more dark fruits in there. Slight bubble gum tinge to it though, so that was nice. Mouthfeel is chewy, lightly thin as it has warmed, but pretty solid with a medium body. 6/4/7/3/14
2005 draught at the Great Lost Bear, with Muzzlehatch on 5/21/2005. This stuff was killer on draught, far better than I remembered from the bottle. Complex brown malts waft from the glass, with light earthy spices, smooth yeast and chocolate. Flavor has light candi sugar, plenty of yeastiness, with biscuits, graham crackers, chocolate pie crusts and caramel syrup drizzled on top. Quite decadent, shall I suggest, "a dessert beer"? Whatever the case, it was fantastic, with a medium-full body, no wateriness or thinning and a very low amount of carbonation. Damn good for an American draught Dubbel. 8/5/8/4/16 Rating is an average of the two.

For some reason the Allagash beers generally disappoint me. I keep thinking that I should like them more but something in the house character I think does not work for me. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a minimal brown head. The aroma was sour nut and a hint of hops. The flavor was nutty, toasted malt and a bit of bitterness on the finish. An ok dubble but nothing to write home about.

An unclear orange beer with a fine white head. The aroma is of yeast and coriander. The flavor is sweet with notes of oranges, yeast, and coriander. A nice American produced Belgian beer, though a little on the sweet side.

Bottle. Batch 49. Another Allagash beer that doesn’t live up to it’s reputation. Light golden colored with a decent white head. Bubblegum and yeast aroma. Big carbinations. Decent malt flavor with some light fruit - banana and green apple... I don’t see any passion fruit - and some spice. Just not enough complexity. It’s catering to the style without showing anything.
