Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

17/09/2017 -small glass from bottle shared with 77ships and tderoeck @Hedonis Ambachtsfest. Hazy light yellow, small white head. Nose and taste : grainy, bit pilsner like. Hmm, Not bad but would expect more with these ingredients.

50ml glass pours a muddy brown with some cloudy, beige head. Nose has caramel, candy sugar, soggy bread, Belgian candy, some port. Flavor has port, marzipan, caramel, malt, cracker, soil, earthy. Boozy, full bodied finish.

Bedenksel van VRT journalist Lieven Verstraete. Gebrouwen met de gerookte thee Lapsang Souchong. Niet bepaald lekker. Vreemde smaak.

Thanks Ugo! Borwn body. Creamy aroma, caramel, oak barrel, soft and full. Nice! Creamy sweet taste, with a dry tannic counterpoint, light raisins, caramel, bubblegum, thankfully not as cloying as one would expect after the full aroma. The tannins took care of that... but at the expense of slightly elevated astringency in the finish. Not bad at all!

Tasted in early August during one of Andy's open days in Oedelem, when it was still very young (not even fully fermented). Glass generously offered by the brewer himself, cheers Andy! Sadly though, for once I did not take notes, thinking I would easily come across this one again later - but since that hasn't happened so far, here's a concise rating from sheer memory: very thin, off-white, loose head totally disappearing in seconds, over a completely cloudy, shrouded beer with a bright orange colour - but orange in the way I never saw before in a beer, like pumpkin soup with a lot of caroteen in it. Aroma was very raw vegetable-like, raw carrots indeed, but with hints of celery, cold pumpkin soup, tomato juice, white pepper and white bread as well. Very refreshing, yet vegetable juice-like taste, carrot-like in its combination of raw green vegetables with actual cooked carrot, quite crisp actually with very low carbonation and a - should I say this - almost 'soupy' or gazpacho-like mouthfeel, very juicy, rooty, earthy, with the basic properties of the beer getting buried under this truckload of 'carrotness'. Ended sweet in a very earthy way just like an actual cooked carrot would, with slight bready and very mildly spicy notes faraway in the background; earthiness for sure, but not nearly as much as I was expecting from a carrot beer. I had a couple of carrot beers before but nothing beats this: this was like carrot juice with white bread (maltiness) soaked into it, lacking completely in complexity, but still delivering exactly what it promised - though perhaps a bit too much so, with very little of the beer character remaining. Still, like his beetroot beer, this one surprised me in the sense that the brewer manages to keep vegetable beers - an alien concept in all traditional beer cultures and even in the present-day craft beer culture - clean and crisp, without descending into 'dirtiness'. I heard Andy is working on a Brussels sprouts beer now and as bad as that may sound, after several of his - doubtlessly very healthy - vegetable and new fruit beers, I am getting convinced he might just pull that off... And I'm already betting it will be green.

Andy Dewilde's take at the now ubiquitous session IPA style, dry hopped with Nelson Sauvin, hence the name. Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Thick and frothy, egg-white, tightly 'paper' lacing, very stable, dense head over an initially clear, warm 'old gold' coloured beer with even warmer orange hue. Aroma of old red apples, Cantaloupe melon, sweet red onions, ripe apricot, lime peel, papaja, white bread dough, orange zest and even some orange water somewhere, lychee, old cloves, chewing gum, sweat, honey, dried camomile flowers, ginger powder, bread crust, white pepper, dry cigarette tobacco. Crisp, fruity onset, estery, hints of banana, melon and a lot of peach, sweet with a souring edge, some pear and perhaps papaja, quite sharp carbonation with notably minerally effects, effectively numbing the fruitiness a bit. Rounded mouthfeel, softly 'white' bready and lightly nutty maltiness, fruitiness lingering, some spicy, clove-ish phenols here and there, evolving into a quenching, drying end with an adequate amount of aromatic hoppiness, a bit tropical but restrainedly so - to the extent that I would probably never have been able to identify the Nelson Sauvin; ends with a sweaty note, as well as ripe papaja, wrinkled red apples and old orange zest accents retronasally, in any case well-perfumed in terms of hoppiness, with a long, gentle but effective, bit resiny and grapefruity hop bitterness settling onto the root of the tongue, yet remaining 'friendly' enough to let quite a lot of that sweetish malty juiciness to pass through, accompanied by very minerally side notes. Old orange peel and sweet red onion accents linger along with this as the beer goes down. Clean, as most of Andy's recent beers tend to be, with a cleverly positioned hop character to it, drying, spicy and quenching, though clearly suffering a bit from 'Belgian yeast interference' - in other words, just a tad too phenolic to achieve greatness. Enjoyable enough though, if only beers of this style, resolution and drinkability were the standard in Belgium, instead of those countless banana ester- and coriander-ridden blondes that now almost completely fill up this particular niche.

One of Vliegende Paard's new fruit and vegetable beers, this one with peach juice, tasted at Hedonis Ambachtsfest. Tightly lacing, snow white, stable head quickly breaking in the middle, misty straw blonde robe with olive greenish tinge. Aroma of indeed both unripe peaches and genuine peach juice but nothing like the sugary 'pêches' we know traditionally in this country; other elements of raw pineapple, sourdough, soggy white bread, a hint of stale sweat, lime juice. Very spritzy onset, overcarbonated and very minerally, with a very genuine fruitiness of pineapple and green banana superseded by the peach juice, which is pleasantly and naturally sweet without any sticky sugariness; sourish notes underneath, wheaty and bready basis, smooth and very refreshing; mildly drying finish with subtly lingering 'real fruit sourishness' and a deep, very soft and 'faraway' hop bitterish accent. Feels completely natural, with the natural sweetness of the peach beautifully added to a refreshing, sourish and wheaty, bready basic blonde; like the others in this project, this is clean, to the point, elegant and quenching.
