Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

At Hedonis Ambachtsfest, cheers Andy! Creamy, dense, pale greyish beige head, very dark chestnut brown colour, hazy and almost blackish but still translucent - this is at least visually a 'brown porter' rather than a modern stout. Aroma of fermented hazelnut shells, black tea, vivid dried orange peel, ginger powder, elderberries, caramel, bitter black chocolate bars and damp earth - but no truffles, alas. Sweetish, candied fig- and old raisin-like onset with a blackberry juice-like sourishness countering it, orange peel fraîcheur is apparent early on and lends the whole beer a somewhat refreshing, aromatic effect; minerally, sharp carbonation, a bit too sharp for a porter in fact. Nutty and caramelly maltiness, toasty on the edges, with an earthy, dead leaf-like flavour towards the end - hinting at cold tea, with that orange peel effect lingering; some herbal hop bitterishness underneath, ending softly bittering with residual caramelly malt sweetishness. Neatly done, a classic brown porter with heavy Belgian traits, but with a refreshing, aromatic, bit ethereal twist to it, lifting the whole thing up from its earthy, damp soil-like basics.

17/09/2017 - tasting glass shared with 77ships and tderoeck @Hedonis Ambachtsfest. Clear light yellow, small white head. Nose is sweet peach. Taste is peach, bit yeast. Pretty nice (not sticky sweet) for a non-sour fruitbeer, just a bit too carbonated.

Thank you for sharing tderoeck & Bierridder_S. Sampled @ Hedonis Ambachtsfest 2017. Golden, little white head. Nose is dull grainy, cold cereal, wheat, fizzy. Fizzy grain cereal, empty. Taste is weak grainy soap, cereal, empty, cow fodder, grain. Weak, empty and I get none of the special ingredients. Too bad.

Thank you for sharing tderoeck & Bierridder_S. Sampled @ Hedonis Ambachtsfest 2017. Dark brown going to black. Nose is herbal, liquorice with an interesting sweet herbal citrus peel tea on top, interesting but nothing like sencha tea. Taste & body is far too thin and fizzy, thin herbal cacao, leaves, thin fizzy almost vaguely sour. So many interesting additives and they are just all lost here. Bit of a let-down.

Thank you for sharing tderoeck & Bierridder_S. Sampled @ Hedonis Ambachtsfest 2017. Citrus golden, little bubbles. Nose is mellow soapy sweetish peach. Taste is basic sweet peach, sugar, nice mellow sweet peach compote, faint candy, some soap in the finish. Carbonation is too fizzy. Quite good for a sweet fruit beer. Pleasant to drink for sure.
