Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Bottle at Deanso’s last THT. Dark reddish brown with bubbly beige head. Floral hops, light citrus, some herbs, coffee beans, some caramel. Quite malty but the hops are not very good. Medium sweet and light bitter. Medium bodied with some watery feel. Meh.

One of Vliegende Paard’s ’boutique beers’ brewed by Andy Dewilde himself in Oedelem and implicitly intended as a ’red IPA’ it seems - if that is the case, this would only be the second Belgian one in that specific segment, to my knowledge at least (Tartaruga’s Simply Rossa, originated at around the same time I guess, being the only other one I know of). Bottle under high pressure: opened over the sink very slowly and carefully, yet still a bit of beer escaped, though nothing dramatic - but if I had opened this swiftly, I’m sure I would have had a gusher. Medium sized, egg-white, fairly dense head leaving dots of lacing all around, retaining well, even largely remaining closed in the middle for a relatively long time; immediately misty peach blonde robe, orangey with perhaps a vague salmon pinkish tinge, turning into a darker, somewhat brownish-hued orange with sediment added. Not too outspoken aroma of bread crust, ripe sweet Cantaloupe flesh, old orange juice, mandarin peel, ripe strawberry, sweetbread or dry apple cake, bubblegum, straw, field flowers (camomile), cooked sweet turnip but also an unfortunate presence of what appears to be H2S (sewer water, even faint rotting egg), as well as a burnt rubber hint (DMTS?), both attempting to ruin the nose for me at first, but luckily fading away after a while and becoming barely noticeable in the very end. Crisp, fruity onset, sweetish banana, melon and peach mingled with a sourish grape peel impression, medium carbonated (actually softer than expected based on the near-gushing), with a ’fluffy’, soft and supple mouthfeel. Some minerally notes accompany the fruity esters over a bready and lightly caramelly, but not ’deeply’ nutty, rounded malt backbone towards a dryish ending where everything clashes together: some late but unmistakable (spicy but almost even a tad medicinal) retronasal phenols, ongoing soft and fluffy malt sweetishness, strongly increasing breadiness due to the yeast (especially after the sediment has been added) and an earthy, mildly spicy and leafy, effective hop bitterness, though nowhere near what I’d expect from an IPA, the earthiness of it being further accentuated by the yeast. The best before date on this one says September 2017 and I roughly estimate this bottle is a few months old max (I bought it in December), which I am willing to take into consideration in rating this. If this was intended as an IPA, it cannot be anything but ’Belgian IPA’: the yeast profile is way overdone in that case, including the ’Belgian’ phenols; the fact that this almost gushed and has a very emphatic breadiness, only accentuates this. Hops are of a floral and earthy character rather than the bright aromas I had hoped for in view of this beer’s classification as an IPA here. I do not recommend to expect a modern ’international’ IPA here: this is, in all, a pleasant, bready and yeasty, hoppy Belgian ale, nothing more, nothing less - and very clearly not in the same range or style of Tartaruga’s Simply Rossa, which I hugely enjoyed. I think this could be better with more hoppiness and some deeper toasted maltiness to it. Yet, seeing the earlier ratings here, I am given the impression that this is a very different beer when consumed very fresh... Leading me to stress once again that bottle dates make sense whereas "best before" dates do not - I still do not understand why bottle dates are still such a rarity both in Belgium and abroad, especially with this international craft beer wave we’re experiencing.

375 c&c shared by Marcus. Pours dark brown with a slight tan head. Mild orange aroma? Med body or so. Flavor is reminiscent of curaçao. Citrus in a somewhat hidden way. Subtle flavors with no real sense of heat. This is good.

Pours rather clear, yet bit hazy blonde. Good white head. Smell is fresh, crisp malts, nice hoppyness, both bitter and aromatic. Taste is sharp bitter. Intense ! Bitter over the whole pallet. Some aroma, not much but enough. Bit crisp maltyness, especially towards and in the aftertaste. Nice

330 ml. bottle @ Gollem. BBF 17.10.2017. Lightly hazy orange, big creamy white head. Nose is murky wet burlap sack sweet malty, overly sugary, thick musty grains, bit dirty. Taste is overly sweet, far too grainy, malty, sugar, unpleasant thick grainy body & taste, thick wet burlap sack, bread, sugar, grain, bit fizzy, lacks hop quality & hard to drink despite the Session moniker, I struggled with this one. Sorry this one is not for me.

330 ml. bottle @ Gollem. BBF 14.01.2017. Deep ruby red cherry red, lemonade, very brief pink bubbles. Nose is indeed massive beetroot, sweet cooked beetroot, faintly watery, overall massive cooked beetroot, wonderful. Taste is lightly sweet beetroot, sugary cooked beetroot, low yoghurt, final bit takes it bit down, low vegetable faintly spoiled beetroot, lightly earthly beetroot, mineral feel, biological weird vegetable lemonade, thin metallic. Body is metallic, thin fizzy, beetroot lemonade feel. Very interesting concept, taste carries a bit too lemonade, spoiled beetroot yoghurt notes but still quite good overall. Great concept & good execution. I am a fan.
