About
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Bottle, 330 ml from Beergium. Shared with JFK10000 and Josip. Pours dark brown with medium frothy off-white head. Malty, roasted, caramel, chocolate, brown sugar. Quite sweet. Medium bodied. Not bad, just too much on the sweet side.

At a tasting, thanks, very little head, cloudy deepish orange color, aroma of honey, wax and candy in the back, flavor of honey, fruit and green peppers in the back, a bit harsh. Not that great.

Very good, just off-white head, utterly stable, over fully hazy orange-amberish beer. Drainwater, garden weeds, sulphur - not very inviting nose. Weedy, garden herbs and weeds, wild hops: bit of raw grain, peppery finish. Medium bodied, slick. Not my kind of stuff, but especially the nose is not what it ought to be.

Beautiful cyclamen-red beer under a fluffy head. Earthy, vegetable, beetroot - special. Earthy² taste, faint fruity, unmistakably beetroot - but great. Light, very light body, good carbonation. Original as none - cudo’s!

330ml bottle. Minimally cloudy, amber colour with average, thick, frothy, to creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white head. Fruity and spicy, hoppy aroma, hints of hay and blood orange. Taste is slightly bitter, fruity and spicy hoppy, hints of hay and blood orange, a cautious doughy yeasty touch. So-so.

And so it came to pass that six like minded people met on the 20th day of November in the year of 2016: those six people shared twenty five fine beers. This is one of those twenty five. 0.75 litre bottle. Dark brown pour, tanned head. Chocolate raisins in the nose, taste similar: Malts rule the brew and although I enjoyed this beer we had some Impy Stouts that were amazing, this didn’t reach those heights.

33 cl bottle, 2014 edition, served in snifter. Pours hazy reddish dark brown (defining it as "dark chestnut" is not a bad approximation); thick tan heavy-lacing head. Aroma is very intense: obviously coffee, but also cocoa, dark caramel, toast, vanilla, and a hint of butterscotch. Creamy, powerful, nice carb. Slightly sweetish start and quite bitter ending. Not so long-lasting as expected, though, but very nice one, all in all. Nice indeed.

75cl bottle @ Rich’s 7k tasting. Pours very dark with an encouraging medium tan head. Subtle chocolate aroma, taste perhaps thinner than expected, although soft chocolate is present alongside some earthy dried dark fruits and coffee. Fine Imperial Stout, but much better were shared tonight.
