Description
Old Chimneys Brewery was started in 1995 by Alan Thomson, a Master Brewer who celebrated 40 years of brewing in 2017.

Located in Market Weston on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, Old Chimneys has achieved an enviable reputation for beer quality. The flagship brand,
Good King Henry Special Reserve, has for 8 years been the highest rated English beer on ratebeer.com

Alan ceased brewing at Market Weston in April 2019 to concentrate on collaborative brewing with top quality brewers in the UK and abroad,
starting with Grain (Norfolk), Northern Monk (Leeds) and Wylam (Newcastle).

The regular Good King Henry is now brewed under Alan’s supervision at Grain Brewery. The strength has been increased to 10% abv, and for the first time in 20 years it is available in KeyKeg as well as cask.

Changed to a client brewer as of 2019 on Brewver as Alan continues to brew elsewhere with the Old Chimneys name, mostly at Grain Brewery.

Bottle ’08 from a friend in foggy London town. Dark brown pour with a minuscule tan head. Expresso, wood and fudge aromas. The taste is silky smooth (think Shaft and I’m talking about Richard Roundtree not Samuel jackson) and sweet with amaretto, chocolate, molasses, toffee, and caramel malt flavors. Outstanding.....

275ml bottle, vintage 2008, trade with Craig in Edinburgh. Oily pour that reveals a low beige, bubbly layer and a deep, black body. Superb aroma of blackcurrant and sweet, earthy malts. Rich flavour of woody vanilla and chocolate followed by semi-bitter, dark fruits and berries entwined with warming alcohol. Long tail. Great sipper (Tromsø, 12.03.2011).
Many thanks to Fin&Loz&Isobel for this beer gift. Vintage 2005. Motor oily pour revealing a jet black body and a mocha-coloured head. Inviting aroma of cocoa chocolate and vanilla, semi dry. Fine blended flavours of smooth chocolate, dried fruits added by a spicy touch. Lingering bittersweet ending. Soft and gentle in the mouth. Delightful stuff (shared with Finn as a part of our mass online tasting, Tromsø 03.12.2013). (7-4-9-5-16).

Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival. Opaque black - brown beer. Residual tan head. Low carbonation. Rich dark malt but quite a light touch of it. Dark chocolate with a trace of coffee. Well balanced tangy dark fruits underneath. Finishes sweeter with a neutral palate. Pretty nice - easy to see why this makes a great base for the Special Reserve!

Bottle that was very kindly passed onto me from Thomas at Merton Winter Beer Festival 05.02.11 cheers Thomas consumed 09.02.11 Pours orange amber with a white head. Warming in the mouth but the first thing I really note is the harshness of the alcohol. This has a distinct bitterness, there is some sweetness there but then there is some bitter peel and a herbyness, however I’m forever drawn back to the big boozy harshness of the alcohol it’s a little raw and this may have been better had I not have succumbed to it so soon after being passed this. However I would like to thank Thomas big time for getting me this, cheers mate! A6 A4 T6 P3 Ov12 3.1

No bitterness. Just a porty malty cream with a light toffee note. Very tasty without being overpowering.
