Description
Old Chimneys Brewery was started in 1995 by Alan Thomson, a Master Brewer who celebrated 40 years of brewing in 2017.
Located in Market Weston on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, Old Chimneys has achieved an enviable reputation for beer quality. The flagship brand,
Good King Henry Special Reserve, has for 8 years been the highest rated English beer on ratebeer.com
Alan ceased brewing at Market Weston in April 2019 to concentrate on collaborative brewing with top quality brewers in the UK and abroad,
starting with Grain (Norfolk), Northern Monk (Leeds) and Wylam (Newcastle).
The regular Good King Henry is now brewed under Alan’s supervision at Grain Brewery. The strength has been increased to 10% abv, and for the first time in 20 years it is available in KeyKeg as well as cask.
Changed to a client brewer as of 2019 on Brewver as Alan continues to brew elsewhere with the Old Chimneys name, mostly at Grain Brewery.

Bottle at chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig ’11. It pours opaque black, with a thin tan lace and low carbonation. The nose is caramel, tar, molasses, treacle, toffee and dirt. The taste is caramel, toffee, tar, molasses, chocolate, treacle, raisin, currant, wood, charcoal, smoke and leather, with a dry finish. It’s packed full of flavour for the alcohol percentage. Nice.

Bottle at chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig ’11. It pours opaque black, with a thick foamy beige head and low carbonation. The nose is charcoal, dark cherry, smoke and roasted malt. The taste is charcoal, chocolate, coffee, liquorice, dark cherry, nut, currant, fig, prune and alcohol warmth, with a sweet, nutty finish. A very flavoursome and tasty Imperial Stout.

Thanks to Joes for sharing. Clear orange color. Don’t smell much hop. Taste suggests an ESB instead of an IPA. Just bitter, not much fruit and hops to me. Low body.

2007 version, 12.5% bottle on 24th July 2010 shared by invitation from Joachim and Victor at the CASK Pub & Kitchen, London. Thick sepia brown with thin foam ring. Yeast, coffee and chocolate aromas. Vinous red-wine notes in main kick, with caramel, toffee and a slightly smoky malt note. Thick, quite viscous mouthfeel. Lingering red-wine dryness on tongue. Would go well with a steaming bowl of stew.

Thanks joes for sharing. I don’t really like the low alcohol English beers. Not very bad, but it’s lacking in body, like most of these.

Thanks to joes for sharing this with me, benzai and countbeer. Colour is very nice. Dark brown with some nice red tones shining through. Smell, taste and mouthfeel are a bit weak, but i guess that’s normal for some English beers. Don’t really like that though.
