Description
Gregory Hall founded Virtue Cider in 2011. He is known for his 20-year tenure as brewmaster at the Goose Island Beer Company, having won 14 consecutive Great American Beer Festival medals and pioneered bourbon barrel-aged beer with Bourbon County Stout. In the spring of 2011, Hall left Goose Island and embarked on a two-month pilgrimage to study the craft of cider, touring and tasting at top cidermakers in England and France. He brought his extensive experience and innovative style to launch Virtue Cider. In 2013, Hall brought the cidermaking venture as close as possible to one of the United States' best apple-growing states of Michigan and launched Virtue Cider in Fennville, Michigan.

From 2015 to 2023 Virtue was owned by ABInBev. Greg Hall bought the Cidery back in 2023.

12 oz can. Tasted alongside Southcider. This has a slightly lighter apple smell, with a very slight edge of beer hop. Pours a fizzy head at first, then settles to an almost still, bright yellow color, with bubbles still streaming from the bottom. Dry cider taste as expected. Slight hoppy aftertaste works with the driness of the cider. Remains light and slightly fizzy, with no cloying sugar or sweetener.

12 cans from Jewel. Light apple nose. Starts a little fizzy, settles to show a slightly bubble golden body. Apple taste is pretty light. I didn't get much sweetness until I tasted again after sampling the drier Northcider. No overdone sugar, apple taste stays mild with a slight touch of cinnamon and maybe cardamon.

On tap at Virtue, pours a clear pale golden with a tiny head. Aroma brings out tart cherries, light cinnamon, and faint bourbon. Flavour is very dry, with light tart cherries, bone dry apples, and a hint of bourbon. I preferred regular The Mitten, but this is nice too. Good stuff.

On tap at Virtue, pours a clear pale blonde. Aroma reveals earthy bourbon and muted apple skins. Flavour is quite dry, with a really nice bourbon and vanilla character upfront, and gentle caramel. Traces of residual sweetness provide the complexity needed. Very nice.
