Description
Gregory Hall founded Virtue Cider in 2011. He is known for his 20-year tenure as brewmaster at the Goose Island Beer Company, having won 14 consecutive Great American Beer Festival medals and pioneered bourbon barrel-aged beer with Bourbon County Stout. In the spring of 2011, Hall left Goose Island and embarked on a two-month pilgrimage to study the craft of cider, touring and tasting at top cidermakers in England and France. He brought his extensive experience and innovative style to launch Virtue Cider. In 2013, Hall brought the cidermaking venture as close as possible to one of the United States' best apple-growing states of Michigan and launched Virtue Cider in Fennville, Michigan.

From 2015 to 2023 Virtue was owned by ABInBev. Greg Hall bought the Cidery back in 2023.

Can from Holiday Market. Pours a clear straw yellow with a quickly dissipating finger of foam. Champagne yeast-like nose with some straw, wet hay aromas. As it warms the funky notes go to the back and apple and some peach open up. Spritzy carbonation with a tart green apple character mid-palate. A touch of brine, then a dry finish. Pretty good for an American cider.

Tap. Pours clear pale golden with a small white head. Aromas of sweet apples, vanilla, light oak, pear. Taste is sweet, some vanilla oaky notes, mostly just apples and a bit of pear like sweetness. Dries out.

Bottle from Top Hops a few blocks up from Union Sq. Maybe more then a few blocks. Duvel glass at home. Clear, champagne-y yellow gold. Some floaties by the third pour. Iron, very mineral-y apple scent. Yeast, chalk, sharps, wisp of oxidation. Taste is sharp apples/kiwi/green grapes/lemon. Chalk, light green bitterness, light plastic, not much else. Otherwise dry, well carbed & thin. Always well made, but usually falls short on complexity. If this brand was cheaper or partnered with a more established cidery, I'd be less difficult to woo.

Sampled from the tap at the cidery. Pours a clear light yellow with no head whatsoever. Aroma combines tart and slight sweet but dry apples with a slight hint of oak underlying. Flavor starts with slightly tart apple with a growing dryness and a hint of oak backing.
