Description
It all began when Jan-Léonard Moortgat and his wife founded the Moortgat brewery farm in 1871. Around the turn of the century, Moortgat was one of the over 3,000 breweries operating in Belgium. Jan-Leonard experimented by trial and error, and his top-fermented beers were soon greatly appreciated in the brewery's home town of Puurs and far beyond. Before long, the Brussels bourgeoisie was also won over by his beers. Business was booming and Jan-Leonard's two sons, Albert and Victor, joined the company. There was a clear division of labour: Albert became the brewer, Victor was responsible for delivering the beer to Brussels by horse and dray. In 1923 the production of Duvel began with just a few crates. Today, Duvel is enjoyed literally all around the world (in over 50 countries) by countless beer lovers. The beer is still brewed with profound respect for the original recipe and the time it needs to mature

(Bottle 25 cl) Pale golden with a rather pretty head. Not only a rather strong pilsener but also one of the more refined with an almost perfumy palate. Everything kept in balance by a good hop-bite. 200997

pours a very white, big head. While ‘reducing’ it stays thick and looks like shaving cream or whipped cream. Color is gold/yellow and shows it’s carbonation with little rivulets of CO2 streaming to the surface. Aroma is a bit of sourish barley/grain. Taste is dry and alcohol, mild. Not bad, but less than I was building up for.

(Bottle 33 cl) Pale golden, decent head. Soft in body with a short, dry slightly hoppy finish. Ok if not exactly thrilling. 210196

Bottle. One of my favourite beers. Blond pale gold beer. Good aromas of yeast, fruit and grainyness. Full and creamy in mouth with lingering tastes of several different citric fruits. Simply wonderful

(Bottle 33 cl) Duvel often changes it’s versions of the abbeybeer Maredsous. This 6 I’ve had before in an "Amber" and a "Donker" version, but I don’t believe those version exist anymore. The labels seem to change just as often. This beer isn’t all blonde. More fully golden, bordering on amber with large floating impurities. Impressive and quite a stable head. Very dry and overwhelmingly bitter - not exactly impressive. 040304

(Bottle 25 cl) It’s not often there’s news from Moortgart, who seems to be busy producing their famous brands Duvel and Maredsous. But Passendale (which I believe is also the name of a nearby battlefield from WW1) came a few years ago. Amber colour, slightly hazy with a definite head. Nice and quite typical nutty ale-aroma. Pleasant but not spectacular. 280204

Bottle. Weak aroma. Golden colour, slightly hazy. At first quite alcoholic flavour, but it turns warming and pleasant. Medium sweetness and maltiness. Dry aftertaste.

Bottle. Malty, sweet aroma. Dark chestnut brown colour, stable rocky head. Strong, malty flavour with warmth from the alcohol. Nice, creamy, swelling mouthfeel. Nice, dryish aftertaste.

Devil’s blonde with a thick white big bubbled head. The aroma is rich in yeast and lemons, with notes of orange peels. In mouth, rich vreamy mouthfeel with nice sweet malts, coriander, and nice sharp hoppy bitterness, and a smooth alcohol in finish, warming you up. Always a delight.

(Bottle 33 cl) Dark amber with a nice, full head. Lots of floating sediments that creates small, bubbly geysers when they settle at the bottom of the glass. Typical, dark- malty flavours with a very full body. Fresh rather than sweet with a subdued touch of hops. 251093
