Description
It all began when Jan-Léonard Moortgat and his wife founded the Moortgat brewery farm in 1871. Around the turn of the century, Moortgat was one of the over 3,000 breweries operating in Belgium. Jan-Leonard experimented by trial and error, and his top-fermented beers were soon greatly appreciated in the brewery's home town of Puurs and far beyond. Before long, the Brussels bourgeoisie was also won over by his beers. Business was booming and Jan-Leonard's two sons, Albert and Victor, joined the company. There was a clear division of labour: Albert became the brewer, Victor was responsible for delivering the beer to Brussels by horse and dray. In 1923 the production of Duvel began with just a few crates. Today, Duvel is enjoyed literally all around the world (in over 50 countries) by countless beer lovers. The beer is still brewed with profound respect for the original recipe and the time it needs to mature

Looks like an ordinary Duvel, maybe this one is a little pale. A non-homogeneous white head. A lottle of bubbles. Smells alcoholic like the normal Duvel. Bitter flavour. Little salty too.

Bright white head with a light gold body. This is the first one I have ever had and its slightly skunky. Could have a better aroma. But I could get scents of alcohol and floral aromas. The taste is quite angry at the initial sip with its high carbonation. Also floral notes with a medium bitter aftertaste. I think this beer could be just a little fresher.

This is almost like a pilsener. Muffy paper aroma. Bitter taste, dry malts.

A bit fruit aroma. Golden creamy head. Fruity peaches in the flavor - nice balance. Fullbodied, with a creamy mouthfeel.

Perfectly amber in colour with an incredibly nice looking off-white head. Apples, malt and a bit of sweetness comprise the aroma. Medium-bodied; Some sweet flavours, very clean taste with a mild malt taste; Coats the mouth nicely; Overall, a decent beer, I was expecting a litte more though. I had this on draught at the Old Toad in Rochester, New York on 20-October-2003.

Dark red/brown with a rocky white head. Not much in the aroma, only some hops. Vegetable spice in the flavor. Medium bodied. Kind of thin. Good but not complex.

Beautiful deep amber color; creamy generous head. Very nice aroma: malt, a roasted malt note, light spices. Quite dry taste, with an evident liquorice note and some roasted malt. Not round enough, not mature.

Blond color; creamy head; beautiful perlage. Pleasant aroma: some malt, paper, old hops, vanilla, coriander. Dry character, with some malt and a good hop note, more aromatic than the average Belgian Ales. Bitter final, just a bit aromatic.

This beer is beautiful...crisp, clear golden with the frothiest white head I've seen since the last time I had Orval - yeasty, fruity aroma, with some bananas - slight hops in the flavor up front, then the crisp sweetness of apples and pears - clean finish with the hops returning - a subtly wonderful complexity that I've come to expect from the better belgians is very present in this one.
